Does anyone know what the difference is between Hotmail and Outlook?
Hotmail was one of the first sites to offer free webmail. It was started by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith and went live on July 4, 1996. It was bought by MSFT in December 1997. Outlook is Microsoft's main email and personal information manager (PIM). It has always been included in Microsoft Office, as far back as Office 97. Outlook Express was a different client, created by the Internet Explorer team, which has since been replaced by the Windows Mail and\or Mail & Calendar apps. No telling how many times in the late 90s I went to help someone that "had a problem with my Outlook" only to find it was Outlook Express. At the time, MSFT had a thing for giving away free, stripped-down "Express" versions of their software (see also: FrontPage Express). Hotmail got a bad reputation for scammers, so MS rebranded it as "Windows Live Mail" in 2005. In 2012, Microsoft announced that they were getting rid of all the "Live' branding, and the new mail service would be Outlook.com. Its UI is based on Outlook Web Access, the webmail client of Microsoft Exchange. Having said that, Microsoft has never gotten rid of any old email addresses, so if you have a hotmail or live.com address, you can still login and get your email from the Outlook.com site. 3 days ago - Sometimes, syncing issues can prevent emails from appearing in your inbox. Update the App: If you are using the Outlook app on your Android device, make sure it is updated to the latest version. Outdated apps can sometimes cause functionality issues. Re-add Account: As a last resort, you might consider removing your Hotmail account from the app and then re-adding it.

September 14, 2025 - Luckily, I still have access to my inbox and sent items as they were prior to account being blocked as I use the Mail function on Mac. Hotmail is the old, now deprecated mail service of Microsoft. Existing hotmail addresses still work, but you can't create new ones. The outlook.com addresses are newer and the current default mail services domain name of MS. You can say the now both are the same regarding software (you have to use outlook.com for both and you get the same Microsoft account experience). Outlook is also the name of the mailing software (just to make things confusing) which is part of the Office package.

Dear Kathy Cutlip

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are having trouble on logging into Hotmail redirects to Outlook.

First and foremost, I sincerely apologize for the difficulty you are experiencing. We take your security and privacy very seriously, and what you're experiencing is something we don't want to see happen.

Hotmail accounts have actually been integrated into Outlook.com by Microsoft, so accessing a Hotmail mailbox will automatically redirect to the Outlook interface. Despite this, you can still log in using your Hotmail email address and password.

Here are the steps to access your Hotmail account:

  1. Visit the login page: Go to https://outlook.live.com.
  2. Enter your Hotmail address: Enter your Hotmail email address (e.g., yourname @ hotmail.com) in the login box.
  3. Enter your password: Enter the password associated with your Hotmail account.
  4. Log in: Click the "Sign In" button.

If you wish to use the old interface of Hotmail, you may not be able to do so, as Microsoft no longer supports the standalone interface for Hotmail. All Hotmail messages will be displayed in the Outlook interface, but you can still access and manage all your messages.

I see that you say the Hotmail account is old, are you logging into your Outlook.com inbox at least once a year (Hotmail is now equivalent to Outlook). Otherwise, we will close your Outlook.com Inbox (naturally, emails from this section will not be received in your Inbox).

Closing your inbox does not mean that the account is closed, so you will not be able to send and receive emails normally until the next time you log in.

I hope my explanation can help you.

Thank you for your time and understanding.

Sincerely,

Hardyjoe.J|Microsoft Community Support Specialist

I am in a state of frustration as I have been trying to access my email (hotmail) for three days. I have followed all the recommendations by Microsoft to be able to recover my account, but it has not helped since I do not remember the answer to the security question or the password. The cell phone number linked to the hotmail account is not the current one. I am desperate for help. Since I have to get the photos from when my oldest son was a baby to put them in his graduation. I do not like how Microsoft handles this situation. They do not give you alternatives. I will appreciate if their is a companioned person that can help me or contact me .

I cannot log in to my hotmail account. - Microsoft Q&A
March 4, 2025 - I am terrified of losing this access as at least this way I can still see my emails. I wont dare log out of Hotmail there so hopefully because I can access my Hotmail emails there, you can help me use that to change my Hotmail password and make Hotmail my primary email address that the authenticator app will be the recovery for.
