Low-Maintenance Siding Options to Save You Time and Money
April 23, 2025 - Unlike natural wood siding, engineered siding includes special waxes, chemicals and overlays to prevent moisture damage and rot. Options like LP SmartSide siding use other chemicals like zinc borate to further resist pest damage and fungal decay, but this can also lead to higher initial costs.

Best siding option
Vinyl is the cheapest and lowest maitainence, but can also be a bit more brittle in cold weather (does that matter if nothing is hitting it though?) Hardboard will be the most expensive I believe, maybe not from materials, but it takes longer to install. Smartside is easier to install because it can be done in longer pieces and is lighter. Vinyl is by far still the most popular option and unless there's a reason not to get it it'll do just fine more than likely. Biggest thing I would do while the siding is off is make sure you have a good water resistant and air barrier on your sheathing. Having the siding off is a good chance to make sure you have proper air and water protection. Also a rain screen (which is just an air gap behind your siding) will help with water management. What type of siding is best? I am suffering from analysis paralysis.
Every system you choose has pros and cons, you have to find the right system that appeals to you. Vinyl is the cheapest, has the lowest maintenance, but arguably the lowest aesthetic value LP smart side is quite a bit more expensive than vinyl, does require periodic painting, and has a pretty good aesthetic Value Fiber cement is the most expensive by a lot, still requires some maintenance, and has arguably the highest aesthetic value All of these items there is still a consideration for product availability, I’ve been waiting for 8” smooth LP for 5 months now. Certain parts and pieces can be hard to find in both LP and fiber More on reddit.com

May 13, 2024 - Although being a “textured” material, there are plenty of sub-options that allow you to play around with the aesthetic. Stucco is generally a mix of sand, cement, and lime — which equate to plaster, and it holds up well to all kinds of weather. On average, you can expect to pay between $10.50 and $18.50 per square foot of stucco. Stone has a timeless aesthetic thanks to its natural look, and it can work as an accent siding or a whole-house siding.
