So I have recently posted to r/DIY and r/lawncare in an attempt to try to get some help with some lawn issues I'm having but it just occurred to me to check r/houston for a lawn care guide/thread since this is the area I live in and proper lawn care will differ by location. Well, I didn't find anything so I thought I would try to start one.
So how about it? Anyone have any tips on how to care for St. Augustine (or other grasses) in our area? Does anyone have a fertilization schedule they can swear by or advise against? Water schedule recommendations etc...?

Yes, I've been caring for my & my parents lawn for 35 years. Make sure you never use a Weed & Feed!!! Follow Randy Lemmons advice. Here is a LINK to his fertilization schedule & LAWN TIPS . Most of the products can be bought at Houston Garden Centers. Unless you are buying fire ant killer, you will not find the stuff you need at Lowe's or Home Depot so don't even bother. Make sure you always have fire ant killer around. Fire ant mounds pop up all the time. Watch out for Virgina Buttonweed & Carpet Grass, these 2 weed will kill your lawn FAST if you don't get down on your knees & pull ALL of it up. Use Bonide Weed Beater for Southern Lawns to kill weeds in your lawn. It's the best for St. Augustine. Watering schedule LINK

I too am curious to hear about this. Houston weather is weird. I have knowledge on growing plans from a Houston-specific book, but the author hates grass so he doesn't really discuss it. :/

I have a St Agustine and I live in Houston. Mine is very stressed out but not dead. At this point is too late for you. Next time increase the mowing height during summer 3.5 - 4 inches. You’ll have to cut it every week no way around it. Also follow the Nitro-Phos schedule (you can google them) is a Houston-based fertilizer company and that’s what I use. I am also in Houston and trying to revitalize my St. Augustine. I am following this: https://ktrh.iheart.com/content/2017-06-26-randys-lawn-fertilization-schedule/ As well as watching The Lawn Care Nut on YouTube. Just put down Prodiamine on Tuesday before the rain came. Will probably do Milorganite around March 15. And yes, it is time to start watering. The St Aug should wake up once we start getting 12 hours of sun which is in about 2 weeks. More on reddit.com

Definitely go with insect control. If you get chich bugs or sod web worms, you're lawn will be destroyed before you can even react. You also want to look into fungicide because May and September are pretty wet and St. Aug is very susceptible. More on reddit.com
