Richard Harris - Wikipedia
3 days ago - He gave up drugs after almost dying from a cocaine overdose in 1978. Harris was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease in August 2002, reportedly after being hospitalised with pneumonia. He died at University College Hospital in Bloomsbury, London, on 25 October 2002, aged 72.
The Loss of Richard Harris’s Dumbledore is Frustrating in Retrospective (I don’t like Michael Gambon’s Portrayal)
I think Gambon being more over the top is a result of bad direction. His worst performance by far is in GoF and if you look at all of the performances in that movie, they’re all kind of weird and over the top. Look back at PoA and you’ll see that Gambon has a very whimsical performance similar to Harris. More on reddit.com
Richard Harris was the perfect Dumbledore and it’s so unfortunate he passed away with just two films under his belt.
I support this also. Richard Harris was something special and his Dumbledore was very special. More on reddit.com
TIL Richard Harris (original Dumbledore) trolled diners and said "It was the food!" as he was being taken from his hotel in a stretcher shortly before he died of cancer.
He was famous for being a heavy drinker most of his life, and supposedly one night a policeman found him lying in the gutter on a street in London. He asked him why he was lying down and Harris replied 'the world is spinning'. When the policeman asked him why being in the gutter would help he said 'I'm waiting for my house to go past' Utter lad. The casting of Richard Harris, was it a smart move, considering Harris's old age?
Harris wasn't that old, he was 72 when he died. He was unlucky because he died from cancer, which can be quite unexpected and kill you at every age. To put things into perspective Maggie Smith was only 4 years younger than Harris. However I do believe that when casting older characters for project like this series, where you have to act for something like 10 years, it's better to err on the side of caution and cast a younger actor, making them look older with make up. Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Michael Gambon as Dumbledore were both in their 60s. I think Ian McKellen was 60 when he started filming. That's like the same age of Brad Pitt. More on reddit.com

Great Actor & Hell-Raising Hall-Of-Famer Richard Harris Born On This Day in 1930 | Austin Film Society
May 9, 2019 - The Irish actor Richard Harris, who died in 2002, would have been 85 years old had he lived, which, considering his well known excesses (he diagnosed himself as “excessive-compulsive”), was not likely or maybe even possible. He was one of the most naturally gifted actors of his time, with a reputation as a dissolute drinker, …

After reading the books, I have been watching the films for the first time ever (Just finished Goblet of Fire for those wondering). I was aware the Richard Harris died after the Chamber of Secrets was filmed, but wasn’t aware of how truly spectacular and accurate his Dumbledore portrayal truly was. I think Micheal Gambian is a good actor, but he just does not capture Dumbledore like Harris did. The softness and calmness of how he handled his character is just perfect when compared to the books, and I truly wish (I know it wasn’t his fault, but I’m just made at this shear reality) that we got all of Richard Harris’s Dumbledore.

I think the switch was actually beneficial. The whimsical way he was portrayed by Harris goes along with the mystical way young Harry views Dumbledore. As Harry ages, and sees Dumbledore as an actual person, the Gambon portrayal is more suitable, giving him more emotion and character.

December 22, 2022 - The accolades didn't stop there. Having played King Arthur in Camelot, Harris became a real life knight after he was invested into the Venerable Sovereign Order of Saint John, Knights of Malta in 1981, and was knighted by the Queen of Denmark in 1985. Renowned for his drinking and hellraising, especially with pals Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole, Harris eventually gave up drugs and alcohol, save for the occasional Guinness later in life.
