Over the past four days, I’ve received two sets of five emails from Walmart MoneyCard, each set addressed to a different full name that is not mine or anything similar to mine. The emails are coming from a greendot.com email address which is the bank that backs the Walmart card. The first email in each set says that my request for a card has been approved, and then there are others saying my card is in the mail, get excited for opting in for overdraft protection, etc. The weirdest one in each set is an email telling me I can get my paychecks two days early and includes full routing and account numbers “to give my employer.” Needless to say, I have not ever applied for any cards from Walmart and do not even shop at Walmart.
I called Walmart customer service and they said they haven’t sent the emails, but I can’t talk to anyone from Green Dot because the only way to speak to someone is to first enter your card number and I…don’t have a card. I did enter my social security number (that was the other option) and the automated voice said that didn’t work so that’s probably a good thing?
The hover over text tells me links and buttons go to the actual Walmart site, and the phone number at the bottom of the email is the actual Walmart money card support phone number. There is an option at the bottom of each email to “unsubscribe” from Walmart marketing communications. Is this a weird and aggressive marketing campaign going to different fake names?
What is going on? What do I do next?
