How do you calculate tax, title, and license on a car?
To calculate TTL: 1) Subtract trade-in value from vehicle price to get taxable amount (in most states). 2) Multiply taxable amount by sales tax rate (e.g., $30,000 × 7.5% = $2,250). 3) Add title fee (varies by state, typically $50-300). 4) Add registration fee (based on vehicle value, weight, or flat fee). 5) Add documentation fee if applicable. Total TTL = sales tax + title + registration + doc fee. Example: $2,250 + $150 + $200 + $300 = $2,900 total TTL.

Can you finance tax, title, and license fees?
Yes, most auto loans include TTL fees in the financed amount, though some lenders may require certain fees paid upfront. Financing TTL means: 1) You drive off with less cash needed (no need to pay thousands in fees upfront). 2) You pay interest on TTL fees over the loan term (adding to total cost). 3) Your monthly payment is higher. Example: Financing $3,000 TTL at 6% over 60 months costs ~$3,480 total (~$480 in interest). If you can pay TTL upfront, you'll save the interest charges.

Does trade-in reduce sales tax on new car?
In most states, yes—trade-in value reduces the taxable amount, saving you sales tax. For example, buying a $35,000 car with a $5,000 trade-in in a 7.5% tax state: you pay tax on $30,000 instead of $35,000, saving $375 in sales tax ($5,000 × 7.5%). However, some states don't offer this benefit and tax the full purchase price. States that DO allow trade-in tax credit: Most states including CA, TX, FL, NY. States that DON'T: Hawaii, Virginia, Maryland, and a few others. Always verify your state's policy.

See here for a little more information: https://revenue.louisiana.gov/TaxForms/20164(6_20).pdf I just did this yesterday, tax was based on the value written on the back the title as sales price and then add on all the title fees and the actual registration fee and that’s about a round sum of what you should expect at registration.
