I’ve read in a few areas that Madame Morrible had involuntarily killed Nessa through the creation of the cyclone. Is it implied somewhere that the house falling in Munchkin land would just cause Elphaba to go and check on Nessa? Or was the intent to kill her in order to lure Elphaba out of hiding? My interpretation from the musical was her intent was murder. Thoughts?

I was thinking recently just how heavily Glinda’s actions impacted Nessa and ultimately lead to her demise. Glinda used Nessa’s disability to guilt Boq into asking Nessa to the dance. She saw her as a pitiful and vulnerable victim and sent Boq after her. This lead Nessa to become completely infatuated with Boq and believing he loved her. Even as Glinda grew warmer and became closer with Nessa she never revealed the truth. Nessa became so insecure that she evolved into the label of ‘Wicked Witch of the East’. Then, after Glinda discovers the truth of Elphaba and Fiyero, she uses Nessa as yet another tool to get revenge in suggesting a rumor about Nessa being in danger to lure Elphaba out of hiding. This of course indirectly leads to Nessa’s death. Throughout the musical Glinda only viewed her as a poor disabled girl that she took advantage of time and time again…ruining Nessa’s life. The treatment of Nessa is some of Glinda’s darkest moments.
Personally, I don't like Nessa because she can be unkind to Elphaba at times, even though they seem close, as seen when Nessa expresses that she misses Elphaba before her sister can go to Shiz with her. They especially appeared to be close as kids.
However, it's evident at certain points that Nessa feels ashamed of her older sister because of Elphaba's appearance and the powers she struggles to control until Morrible takes her under her wing, secretly taking advantage of her gift.
Despite my dislike for Nessa, I can relate to her. I have cerebral palsy, which affects my right side; my right arm doesn’t work as well as my left, and I often rely on my left hand. In places like malls, I sometimes need to use a wheelchair to avoid tiring myself out, especially since I get fatigued after walking for a while. I had to use a wheelchair during childhood for surgeries, and we kept the same one for those occasions.
As a disabled person, I understand the insecurity of questioning whether people, whether friends or romantic partners, care for you out of pity or charity or just with pure love. I don’t want to speak for all disabled individuals—as everyone has different experiences—but I have had moments of second-guessing relationships, wondering, "Does this person really care for me? Do they pity me? Do they feel obligated to put up with me?" All I desire is genuine relationships and to be treated as an equal.
Nessa is truly cruel to the people of Munchkinland, and I see that she has an unhealthy obsession with Boq. In the film version, Nessa notices Boq staring at Glinda at the train station, which feels like her breaking point. At that moment, the pure parts of Nessa seem to die, and she transforms into the Wicked Witch of the East, trapping the Munchkins to keep the one she desires by her side. In the Broadway version, Boq appears visibly frustrated with still dating Nessa and annoyed that Glinda continues to call him "Bick."
I think we can all agree that Glinda shouldn’t have pushed Boq onto Nessa to get him out of her hair, but Boq had a choice. He didn't have to ask Nessa out. He still had the chance to back out when she asked him, "Is it because I'm in this chair, and you felt sorry for me?"
At that moment, he could have told her the truth and let her down gently, assuring her that it wasn’t her disability but his feelings for another that were the issue. Instead, he saves face by saying, "Because you are so beautiful!" This moment truly marks the beginning of his undoing and fate.
I believe that you can dislike a character while still having empathy and understanding their perspective without justifying their actions. All Nessa wanted was to be truly loved, and she allowed her obsession to destroy her.
I hear that in the film, they will reveal that it is not her disability that is the central issue, since a whole new character will also be in the mix and smitten with Nessa. I’m glad they are illustrating that her obsession is the problem; she's so blinded by it that she can’t see someone else who is genuinely interested in her.
I'm also pleased to see that they are meeting the actress's needs and not "fixing" her by making her walk with a stunt double or altering her appearance by cgi-ing her face on someone who can walk. I don’t know exactly how the story will unfold, but I hope to experience and feel the raw emotions in The Wicked Witch of the East.
i haven't seen the musical but im a big fan of the wicked movie as well as wizard of oz and oz the great and powerful. hopefully someone on here can answer my questions about her!
firstly, does nessarose ever wear her classic witch outfit from the tornado scene in wizard of oz? im hoping for the movie, she wears a pointed hat and a red themed outfit as thats how she was described! i really want to see her outfit in color since we briefly see the wicked witch of the east in black and white before she is killed off. however, i havent found any pictures of her in the musical wearing anything like that, even though she is supposed to die wearing a witch outfit, a pointed hat, and riding a broomstick. (also, how does she get her own broomstick? did elphaba make her one or something?)
im hoping she isnt killed off as just the "governess of the munchkins" or whatever she's supposed to be, and instead as the wicked witch herself. i think for nessarose it makes more sense for her to be actually evil and she should be killed as a wicked witch and not some innocent governess. has she turned evil by the point she dies in the musical?
also, im curious about how they will get her to be able to stand if they actually cast a disabled actress to play her? they better keep the fact that she is able to stand since the wicked witch of the east is able to pedal on a bike (so she can stand as well). i don't really care about the "fixing disabilities" part since for some reason, the wicked musical writers decided to make a non-disabled character disabled, which makes a plot hole for the wizard of oz movie.
if anyone has any answers, please let me know! im curious about how the wicked witch of the east will turn out for wicked part 2!
That Dorothy wasn’t in on the plan to fake Elphaba’s death with her. Elphaba obviously filled up that bucket of water for a reason, once she decided to “surrender”. She must have known she would need it to make everyone think the child sent by the wizard had been successful in melting the wicked witch.
I know it’s traditional for Dorothy’s friends to free her. But Elphaba also could have easily let her out herself and made a deal with her. Explain that if she helped her play out the melting scenario, then she would let her take her broom, so that she could go home.
Also, just observing the size of the trap door and how it only seems to open outwardly, there’s no way it could be used to fake a melting in front of someone, unless the only person Elphaba wanted to believe it had really happened was Glinda from her hiding place.
Very interesting and detailed analysis, thought I’d share.
