r/wicked on Reddit: about nessarose becoming the wicked witch of the east...
December 5, 2024 -

i haven't seen the musical but im a big fan of the wicked movie as well as wizard of oz and oz the great and powerful. hopefully someone on here can answer my questions about her!

firstly, does nessarose ever wear her classic witch outfit from the tornado scene in wizard of oz? im hoping for the movie, she wears a pointed hat and a red themed outfit as thats how she was described! i really want to see her outfit in color since we briefly see the wicked witch of the east in black and white before she is killed off. however, i havent found any pictures of her in the musical wearing anything like that, even though she is supposed to die wearing a witch outfit, a pointed hat, and riding a broomstick. (also, how does she get her own broomstick? did elphaba make her one or something?)

im hoping she isnt killed off as just the "governess of the munchkins" or whatever she's supposed to be, and instead as the wicked witch herself. i think for nessarose it makes more sense for her to be actually evil and she should be killed as a wicked witch and not some innocent governess. has she turned evil by the point she dies in the musical?

also, im curious about how they will get her to be able to stand if they actually cast a disabled actress to play her? they better keep the fact that she is able to stand since the wicked witch of the east is able to pedal on a bike (so she can stand as well). i don't really care about the "fixing disabilities" part since for some reason, the wicked musical writers decided to make a non-disabled character disabled, which makes a plot hole for the wizard of oz movie.

if anyone has any answers, please let me know! im curious about how the wicked witch of the east will turn out for wicked part 2!

r/wicked on Reddit: I'm sorry, but Nessarose is the most vile character in Wicked
December 14, 2024 -

Granted Wicked is all about the complexities and how not everything is black or white, but i'm sorry Nessarose is pure evil. She's worse than Morrible and the Wizard for sure, those 2 didn't have any reason to treat Elphaba well, Nessa did. Elphaba is a very supporting sister to Nessa, she doesn't coddle her, she treats her as a human being and seeks to understand her and how she feels, unlike their daddy. Elphaba also protected Nessa as a child from other children yet how Nessa repays her older sister? Blaming her for everything wrong in her life, pretty much blaming Elphaba for being born with functioning legs (like somehow Elphaba wasn't bullied and condemned over her green skincolor).

For as much as people try hate on and call Glinda the villain, she's an actual compelling character and has a lot more redeeming qualities than Nessa. Glinda's arc is that she's someone who's been pampered her whole life and that she finds herself not being able to have everything she wants for the first time. While Glinda's patriarchal patty ways paint her as unsympathetic in a few moments, her redeeming qualities are always there and there is enough details for us to understand why she choses to stay behind and not rebel like Elphaba, Glinda is about about being Pop-u-lar, she's all about keeping appearances, being in the good graces of people. And most of all Glinda is a mirror to us like Elphaba is, she's the other side of the coin, Elphaba represents the fighter side in us that rebels and suffers the consequences, Glinda represents how we choose not to act out of playing safe and keeping appearances. I feel this is why Glinda is mostly a beloved character, the fans don't judge her harshly because she's also a mirror to us, we all like to think of ourselves as Elphaba, but in fact we're more like Glinda than we would like to admit.

Now back to Nessarose, she's not at all understandable. Her motivations are weak, she hates on her own sister pretty much because Elphaba is not disabled like her, she can't empathize with Elphaba even tho Elphaba got it worse than her. Nessarose is seen with pity, Elphaba is looked down upon and her skin color is a significant factor in her being othered and condemned no matter what she does. Nessarose represents the worst side of humanity, she represents someone who's othered who feels good about herself by opressing and being a douche to others who are equally, if not more, opressed than her. She's the representation of a very famous phrase in my country by educator Paulo Freire "when the education is not liberating, the dream of the opressed is to become the opressor".

I really like the movie actress, Marisa Bode, and what she did for the character. But i was listening to interviews and she was acting like Nessa was good representation for disabled people, i'm sorry, no disabled person would like to be represented by her. Nessa is tho a necessary representation as it showcases that you can be disabled and be a douchebag, she's just not the inspirational type of disabled character.

I feel like in some ways Nessa is more like Glinda than Elphaba. She is raised in privilege and is the favorite child. While she feels less than and different because of her circumstances, she is actually raised with more love and care than Elphaba ever was. While Elphie is the one who stands up for her, her father dotes on Nessa constantly and showers her with praise and gifts. Her father is cruel to Elphaba, and I think some of that rubs off on Nessa. NessaRose already feels different, and having someone as weird as Elphaba as her older sister makes it even harder for her to make friends and live a normal life. She wants to be independent and liked for who she is, and when Elphaba comes to Shiz and overshadows her she feels like she is losing that again. I can't speak for that community, I guess I don't see her as a negative. I think it's actually refreshing to see a "disabled" character have some depth and not just be scenery or pitied. She was strong willed and determined, and just as much a victim of how she was raised as Glinda or anyone else. I really liked the character and how she was played, but I understand the criticism.

I'm always going to be a Nessa defender. In Part 1...what does she really do wrong? I know a lot of people hate on her for not defending her sister but it's not like she joins in on the bullying or anything. Here's the thing. Some people do not like it when people make a scene on their behalf. And Nessa is established to be one of those people. Elphaba defending her in the beginning and making her float up in the air was not something Nessa liked or was thankful for, because it called a ton of attention to her which is exactly what she was trying to avoid. Yeah, she definitely could have been a better sister, but it's not like she pretends she's not related to Elphaba, refuses to interact with her, or participates in bullying her. Nessa went to Shiz wanting a fresh start where people weren't constantly babying her, treating her like she was helpless, and calling her a tragedy. She just wanted to fit in. And she FINALLY thought she got that with Boq. He was the first person to just call her "beautiful" and not "tragically beautiful" or some other ableist nonsense, so it's no wonder she'd immediately get extremely attached to him. But it was all a lie. Not only was he actually using her as a charity case, but it was to get the attention of another girl and he led her on for years! She even outright asked him and he lied! Yeah, this was partially Glinda's fault since she came up with the idea but Boq went way too far for way too long. I really hope they add more to her characterization in Part 2 because really, after what she went through, it's no surprise she snapped and turned evil, but she plays such a minor role in part 2 and I'd love to see her actual corruption arc. Not seeing how she went from normal college student to literal dictator is the biggest disappointment about her character and I feel like there's a major missed opportunity to give her some depth. And honestly, she can do whatever she wants to Boq and I will support her in it because what he did to her was extremely cruel.

They seem to be setting up Nessarose to be much less wicked than she is in the novel and musical. Is this just because they’ve been advertising part one and not part two or are they softening her portrayal?

Unpopular opinion: Nessarose is a lowkey villain of Wicked - turning away from Elphaba every time she needed some support. Elphie saw and understood Nessa and did nothing but love her sister. She deserved so much more support from her.
Nessa becomes the wicked Witch of the East… You can see her evil tendencies throughout Wicked. She constantly yells at Elphaba and rolls her eyes. ... My 12 yo sister was so disgusted by her behavior that she said to me that’s the real villain in the movie. That made me feel so grateful and secure in the fact that my baby sister is an angel will always be my best friend ... Read the book. There's absolutely nothing "low-key" about Nessarose.

r/wicked on Reddit: Glinda and Nessarose’s Demise
August 6, 2024 -

I was thinking recently just how heavily Glinda’s actions impacted Nessa and ultimately lead to her demise. Glinda used Nessa’s disability to guilt Boq into asking Nessa to the dance. She saw her as a pitiful and vulnerable victim and sent Boq after her. This lead Nessa to become completely infatuated with Boq and believing he loved her. Even as Glinda grew warmer and became closer with Nessa she never revealed the truth. Nessa became so insecure that she evolved into the label of ‘Wicked Witch of the East’. Then, after Glinda discovers the truth of Elphaba and Fiyero, she uses Nessa as yet another tool to get revenge in suggesting a rumor about Nessa being in danger to lure Elphaba out of hiding. This of course indirectly leads to Nessa’s death. Throughout the musical Glinda only viewed her as a poor disabled girl that she took advantage of time and time again…ruining Nessa’s life. The treatment of Nessa is some of Glinda’s darkest moments.

r/wicked on Reddit: Elphaba and Nessarose: Understanding their Dynamic
1 month ago -

I just feel so deeply about the overall story of Elphaba and Nessarose.

As someone who has an older sister, as well as a younger sibling that has Autism, I feel like I can see the different sides that both Elphaba and Nessarose have when it comes to the story of Wicked, or more so their story within the context of being sisters and how they grew up before they ever stepped foot in Shiz University.

Now trust we all know the path Nessarose finds herself on, and how her story ends.
I just feel like tossing Nessarose into the box of the "bratty, ungrateful, mean younger sister" label is understandable, yet kind of one sided.

The type of sibling relationship that Elphaba and Nessarose have is because if that wicked a-hole of a father and their careless, cheating mother. The foundation that the sisters grew up in, neither of them ever stood a chance. They were going to become the wicked witches regardless.

Elphaba suffered from eldest daughter syndrome yes, but Nessa was seen as perfect and treated like a princess, by her father yet, was rarely seen or heard by anyone really but Elphaba. Then again, there was a codependency that occurred between the two, because (whether she ever truly wanted to admit it or not) Nessa DID rely on Elphaba for a lot, but she also resented Elphaba nor did she ever stick up for her older sister.

So, you have the overall resentment from Nessarose towards Elphaba, Nessarose feeling like everyone is trying to push and pull her every which, way, yet getting treated with this "careful she'll break" attitude, not being seen by the guy she likes etc, and then you have Elphaba who raised one and doesn't know anything but protecting and looking out for her sister.

Elphaba does her best to not take any pent-up resentment and anger towards Nessarose, but Nessarose doesn't do the same. It's sad, no one wins. They were put into these certain roles since each other's births, and they didn't know how to correct, especially on Nessarose's end.

The movie/musical doesn’t really dig into their relationship a ton, but if you want more raw material about their sibling dynamic, I highly recommend the novel. They are both products of their childhood and kinda mirrors of each other.

I’m a person with a disability which affects my life a lot, I’m not in a wheelchair but have a very extreme and rare case of a physical disability. I don’t actually have an older sister but my old best friend began treating me like a baby when it got worse. She referred to myself as my nurse, said she knew better than me on my own disability because she “did research” and then got all of my other friends to infantilise me the same way she did because it was the right thing to do. I am not low functioning. I get the top test scores in my year and have been told by multiple teacher how I’m mature for my age and the most mature in my class. People hear I’m disabled and think I must be coddled and it drives me insane. I’m not a disability, I’m a person with a disability. Nessarose seems to have had a similar experience, coddled treated like a baby and not trusted to take care of herself. I can see myself becoming her, to be quite honest, most people won’t be able to under the pure resentment that comes from people seeing themselves as your keeper when you don’t need to be kept. I don’t know how relevant this all is but it’s my opinion on Nessa’s side, I’m not really able to comment on Elphaba’s side as I’ve never been in her place

r/wicked on Reddit: Is it just me or is the hate for (movie) Nessarose disproportionate to what she does in act 1

Like, with the hate she gets you would expect it to be because of act 2, all she does in act 1 is be a bad sister to Elphaba, and I feel like people need to understand that she is the way she is because of their father, she IS spoiled, she IS ashamed of Elphaba, and I would bet their father also made Nessa believe that she is wheelchair-bound because of her, just like he made Elphaba believe it is her fault. All of it to say I'm scared for Marissa Bode after For Good releases, some people have a hard time separating fiction from reality
