Does levothyroxine cause weight gain or loss?
In most cases, levothyroxine causes some weight loss. According to the American Thyroid Association, when this medication is started, you may lose up to 10% of your weight. This weight is mainly water weight, since being hypothyroid makes you retain water.

Does drinking a lot of water help the thyroid?
I'm 35F and was diagnosed with Hashi in Oct. 2022 along with antibodies. At that time, my TSH was 53.5 and doc said maybe give some time to see if it goes down on it's own because at that time I wasn't feeling the classic symptoms aside from the neck puffiness and very little fatigue Levels did go down gradually but plateaued at 5 this summer and that's when I started getting extreme fatigue, brain fog, cold, and feeling like I was in a funk for days at a time. I started 25 mcg of Synthroid in Sept. and then 50mcg in Oct. Got labs done last week and now my TSH is 2.26 (T3 and T4 also both in normal range) which means the meds worked and I've def felt the fatigue and brain fog significantly less but I've gained 10 pounds since being diagnosed and gained 5 more in the last 2 months. I was hoping to see the scale begin to go down now that I'm on meds but instead it's starting to increase. I think I'm most frustrated because 'these sweatpants are the only thing that fits right now' (*Mean Girl reference*). For context, I just started a Ph.D. program in late August and was very active just before then. I went from doing vigorous exercise 5 times a week to 2 times a week. I know the stress is one reason why I've gained more weight but I think I just need to relate, hear some tips, and get some hope right now that I'll be able to fit into my clothes again. I'm not in a place where I can buy a whole new wardrobe mentally or financially and I know I can at least lose 10 pounds if I tried but, it's so much harder now...
