r/UniversalHollywood on Reddit: Ranking every ride at Universal Hollywood
March 2, 2025 -

This is just my opinion btw. I never rode secret life of pets btw so thats why its not here

12. Minion mayhem: More like MIDion mayhem am i right or am i right haha. Nah but fr this ride is really just not all that great. I don't hate it but I'd really just rather go on any other ride. Preshow is cool tho

11. Kung fu panda adventure: The whole part where the walls fall away is super dope. Other than that not much to write home about here

10. Silly swirl: It's alright. Nothing really special. I mean i'm not exactly the target audience but it's a fun enough time

9. King kong: Pretty cool part of the studio tour. Not an absolute must see but it's fun and I like it

8. Fast and furious: A solid finale to the studio tour. I know it gets a lot of flack but I don't care because I have fun when I'm on it. The reason it's higher than king kong is that I think it has a sense of finality to it that makes it stand out more, probably because of its placement at the end of the tour

7. Jurassic world: I don't remember this one that much. I had to google a video of it. I think it's designed really cool, but honestly I'm just not a huge fan of getting wet on rides

6. Mario kart: As someone who grew up loving mario, I found the line to be cooler than the actual ride. The ride itself was pretty cool but there was a lot going on and it got very confusing. I loved the rainbow road part though. Honestly I think I just need to go on it again

5. Hippogriff: It's a solid, fun coaster. Wayyyyyy too short but it's fun while it lasts. I like running this one a couple times over when the line's short

4. Transformers 3d: Hella underrated. This is how you do a motion simulator. Absolute banger every single time

3. Simpsons ride: To be honest I didn't think this would rank as high as it did but honestly looking back this ride is awesome. Yeah the line is long but you are very much rewarded for your patience because you don't just get a ride, you pretty much get a whole show

2. Forbidden journey: Absolute classic. I love how it combines screens with real props. I really love when there's no line for this ride and you can just go on it over and over that's really cool

  1. Revenge of the mummy: THE GOAT. This ride eats every other one in the park for breakfast (at least until Hollywood Drift opens). Love the theming, love the design, love how intense it is, and the ending part where it sends you backwards through the whole thing is absolutely inspired. Just the best man

December 4, 2023 - Pro Tip: If you’re wondering how many roller coasters are at Universal Studios Hollywood, you’ll find three that stand out for their speed and intensity. Most roller coasters have height requirements ranging from 39” to 42”, with a waistline maximum of 40” or less. Unsure if you meet the size restrictions? No worries! Test seats at each ride entrance have your back.

r/UniversalHollywood on Reddit: First time going to Universal and worried about rides
June 11, 2024 -

I'll be going to Universal for the first time next Saturday with friends. I love amusement parks but honestly not a big ride person. To give context I'm mostly a Disneyland person and I just can't do roller-coasters. I've done Space Mountain (pretty fast but I can handle it decently), Guardians of Galaxy (hated the drops), and I can handle Star Tours fine. The rides I do want to try are The Simpsons (loved the show growing up), Transformers seems cool. Definitely wanna also wanna try the Studio Tour and Water World attractions as well. Are there any other rides that are cool for me to get on? Also what are some cool activities I could do in case my friends are on higher intensity rides? Any tips for a first time attendee and food to eat on a budget?

Universal doesn't have "big" rides because it's all about production mainly. The only rollercoasters atm are Mummy & Flight of hippogriff, it's like 30 seconds. Universal Hollywood only has a hand full of rides, most with big screens, so it's worth trying or cheat and watch a pov ride on Youtube. Jurassic Park is probably the wildest (big drop), next being Mummy (fast launch). You can watch some shows (raptor encounter, love seeing kids reactions) or interact with some characters/take pix or simply people watch. As for budget, eat big before you go, bring your own food or share an entree with a friend!

Here are my recommendations to try and get on: Mario Kart - The lines can be epic for this so it may not be worth the time investment, but the effects, sound and presentation are really impressive. I almost wish it didn't have the constant gamification of trying to shoot shells at things with the little headset. Jurassic World - a classic big boat 'log ride' with some great dinosaur animatronics and soundtrack. I've gotten pretty wet on it lately. It's also fun to meet Blue the raptor at the Raptor Encounter for a photo, the raptor puppeteering is very convincing and she jumpscares many guests. Studio Tram Tour - This is the 'ride' that made Universal as a theme park and is definitely worth the time, it's unlike anything at Disneyland. They show various movie/TV sets and artifacts and there are several special attractions the tram will drive through along the way. Water World - a classic stunt show. There are rumors it may be replaced soon with an expanded Harry Potter land. Despicable Me - this is a "star tours-like" motion simulator, but it slammed me around into the restraints more than I liked. If you like Star Tours you might like it. Secret Life of Pets - A cute classic dark ride from the Pets universe. I'd avoid: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey - This was a technical spectacle when it released, but it's based on a robot arm that moves you in all directions seemingly at random and I get super sick on this one since my brain has no idea where we're going next. Plus I believe it was originally a 3d ride and they since converted the screens to 2d but they're still sort of blurry, which adds to the vomitfest. Transformers - Also makes me nauseous since it's another "3d" screen based ride that shakes you around while you watch a 3d movie on the screen. Flight of the Hippogriff - I like this one since it's nice and smooth, but it's a classic roller coaster and you're not a roller coaster fan. The Mummy - It's a dark indoor roller coaster sort of like Space Mountain but it also goes backwards so you can't see where you're going which messes with my motion sickness. You may or may not like Simpsons, it's based in the old Back to the Future building and ride vehicle system, but unlike BTTF I don't think the Simpsons experience is nearly as polished. I wish BTTF was back here, maybe it's a possibility when Disney reclaims the Simpsons rights as the new owners of Fox around 2026. As for eating, I like the Minions cafe - the meatball grilled cheese and the loaded chicken nachos are both tasty and not too expensive. ($13 or so as I recall), Cocina Mexicana, and Mel's Diner. I wanted to love Three Broomsticks because the ambience is great, but I just haven't had a great experience with the food there. Unfortunately Disney has a better food experience overall than Universal, food is one of USH's weaker spots.

r/UniversalHollywood on Reddit: Hollywood vs Orlando differences?
November 12, 2023 -

Haven’t been to Universal Hollywood since the 90s. Currently live in Florida and visit orlando’s universal often. By comparing maps there are many rides with similar names. That said, Disneyland and Magic Kingdom have many items with the same name but the rides and experiences totally different.

So, for those who have visited both universal parks, what are some items shouldn’t be overlooked?

The biggest and most obvious one is the studio tram tour. Orlando (or any theme park in the world AFAIK) doesn’t have anything like it. Also, not unique amongst all Universal parks, but USH has the Waterworld stunt show unlike USO. Not a ride, but the Starway escalators between the upper and lower are pretty unique (and kind of annoying to ride) and the views are nice. The Fast & Furious coaster will be unique once it’s completed. Besides that, most of the duplicate rides are pretty similar, if not exactly the same. The biggest difference I can think of is the two Mummy coasters, as they have entirely different storylines and mostly different ride layouts. Orlando’s (the superior version IMO) breaks the fourth wall by being based on the cast and crew of the film uncovering a real curse on their set, while the Hollywood version has guests go into the world of the movie itself by entering the mummy’s tomb. Jurassic World has obviously been updated to be based on the newer movies but the actual ride layout wasn’t modified and is very similar to Jurassic Park in IOA.

I just took my first trip to Hollywood last month. Rides that are the same (or close enough): Despicable Me, Forbidden Journey, Simpsons, Transformers, and Flight of the Hippogriff (a different track but nothing special) Fast & Furious, and Kong are the same on both coasts but these are incorporated into the Hollywood tram tour. Rides that are similar but different enough to add to the agenda: Mummy (same concept but way different track), Jurassic World (similar track but theming is different and animatronics are much newer) Unique to Hollywood: Mario Kart, Secret Life of Pets, Studio Tour, Kung Fu Panda show, Waterworld show

July 15, 2024 - Little details, such as the broken wood as riders wonder where the dragon went, seem to better create a sense of presence when they feel like they can almost be touched. Likewise the temperamental Whomping Willow tree. As guests spin and the tree lurches, all sense of direction is obscured, a deception that isn’t broken by a blur of the screen. Forbidden Journey opened in Orlando in 2010 — it landed in Hollywood in 2016 — and the goal was always to merge the real world with the virtual one.

August 3, 2021 - Part of what makes Universal Hollywood so unique is that it sits right beside so many working soundstages and movie sets. It’s cool! But it is also noticeable relative to other theme parks. The layout of the park doesn’t make much sense without considering other factors and that is at least part of the reason for a lack of rides.
