Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is known as the world's largest semiconductor fab, operating multiple gigafab including FAB 18 in Taiwan, which is one of the largest and most advanced semiconductor fabs.
Semiconductor manufacturing capacity of different countries by chip size. Taiwan, South Korea, USA, China, Japan etc.
Am I understanding the chart correctly - basically Taiwan has the largest capacity to produce the smallest chips? More on reddit.com
ELI5 why there are only few chip makers in the world ...? Why every major company depending on TSMC ..?
Tldr, it's incredibly expensive. The biggest cost to chip makers is typically the photolithography tools. The best of the best is ASML's at $380 million That's for 1 machine. If anyone wants to be competitive in the cutting edge of the industry, you pretty much need to buy one. So once you factor in the rest of the equipment you're looking at $1bn bare minimum just to spin up a fab. Now consider if you actually want to run at scale, you'll need dozens of these The other half is it's really really hard. Apple definitely has the money to spin up their own internal fabs to compete with tsmc, but it's not easy to find the hundreds and hundreds of highly qualified engineers More on reddit.com
In which countries are Intel processors manufactured ?
Intel has major manufacturing fabs in Oregon, Arizona. New Mexico and Ireland have a smaller foot print. All 4 fabs produce a variety of CPUs, chiplets, and bridge die. Also Intel is starting a major build out in Ohio but won’t be ready for another few years. There is manufacturing in Malaysia and China. China is older technology chips that are still need or chipsets. None of the latest and greats technology chips are made in China. Packaging is done in Vietnam where the dies have already be singulated from a 300mm wafer and assembled and be sent to OEMs/distributors for install into computers/servers. More on reddit.com
USA leads the world in semiconductor chip design but lags behind in fabrication and assembly
Intel is the last leading edge semiconductor company in America. I think Texas Instruments is a distant second, everyone else designs their own chips and sends them to TSMC to be fabbed. I worked at Intel for 7 years and the downturn was palpable - heat management was a major problem which we never seemed to be able to solve, the tension between the Fab side of the company and the rest was ever present, and former customers like Apple got tired of our mess and poached the talented folks to design their own chips. Not to mention major strategic misses that prevented them from continuing GPU and mobile suitable chips. I think the company may be too far gone to save even with the CHIPS ACT subsidies. Maybe the new(ish) CEO can manage it, but a turnaround like this takes a decade. More on reddit.com
Are they building a chip factory in the US?
The American plant is TSMC's most advanced chip plant outside the home market. The project was announced in May 2020, and construction started in June last year. In comparison, TSMC is often able to reach the equipment move-in phase for new factories in Taiwan in about 15 months, and in some cases as little as 12 months. How many chip factories are being built in the US? There are currently around 102,000 employees in semiconductor and circuit manufacturing in the United States. New chip factories will each require thousands of workers. Samsung recently announced plans for a $17 billion chip pl

Why can't Americans make car chips?
While the chip shortage can be attributed to several factors, the primary cause is the COVID-19 pandemic. At the beginning of the pandemic, car manufacturers closed factories and temporarily halted the production of vehicles. Meanwhile, shutdowns and virtual work and school caused an increase in demand for other electronics. Why can't America make semiconductors? The primary reason for the shortage is production capacity: the vast majority of semiconductor factories (or "factories") are already running at more than 90 percent utilization. Semiconductors were the US's fourth largest export in 20
