They will definitely need a separate amplifier and wiring to be used. Like any "vintage" speaker, they'll probably need some work. I've avoided these because getting the covers off to work on them seems dicey. I wouldn't pay $200 for them given that there's really no way of knowing how well they work as is. Too big of a gamble for me but I admit they look really clean from here.

I would pass. I have yet to hear a good Bose speaker, much less a great one.

Hey folks,
First time poster here so thank you in advance for the help.
I'm just starting to get into physical music and whilst browsing some local places I found a rather intreaguing pair of Bose model 501s.

I kinda dig the retro aesthetic and, from what I have been able to read online, people remember them quite fondly. They're only about $150 and the seller says there's no visible exterior damage. They say that there is a sight buzzing at higher volumes but I think that would be due to a bad cable/interference?
So, are these worth picking up? I understand they won't be cutting edge performance but the idea of the sound being a bit retro is fine by me!
Additionally, I'm looking at having these hooked up to an AUDIOTECHNICA AT-LP6 turntable. would these be able to hook up with a minimal amount of work/rewiring or is it too complicated for a novice such as myself?

I have a pair of 501 IVs that I picked up 10yrs ago for $150. I LOVE them. Not only are the aesthetically pleasing, they sound fantastic. I have them hooked up to a Pioneer SX950. $150 today is a steal. I see them go for $500 now.

sight buzzing at higher volumes Woofers probably need a refoam. That is something you could do yourself. You have to make sure it is perfectly centered, but in general it is not terribly difficult. hooked up to an AUDIOTECHNICA AT-LP6 You will need an amplifier. Wiring is not complicated at all. Plug bare speakers wires into the speaker's terminals, screw or plug the other end's bare wires into the amp's speaker terminals. The power recommendation for the 501 is 10-200 watts, which is a crazy range. I would personally not try to drive them with 10 watts unless you will never want to crank them really loud. I recommend getting something with at least 40 watts per channel. You could do with a bit less, but 10" woofers move a lot of air, you'll need some watts behind them for the speakers to really sing. And to avoid blowing them by underpowering.

Aside from the cat scratches, they look moldy or sooty. If they are moldy there is nothing you can do and I would toss them out. Otherwise you can run them without the grilles.
