Forgive me, this is like half r/AL and half r/internetparents material. I was trying to find out how much it would cost to get my car registered in Alabama when I move. I know it'll vary a bit from county to county, but all I could find was something about a $23 dollar fee plus some other admin fee that was a couple bucks. There's no way that's all it's going to cost, right?

Think $100-150 more for a late-model car. If you keep the car long enough it goes to zero. I have a couple of 15-yr-old cars that cost $26 or whatever it is to register. (Edit : the ad val tax goes to $3 and stays there.) The extra tax is ad valorem though so deductible on your federal tax return.

EDIT 3/3/25: I ended up getting a letter in the mail that the city had received my info and my car was ready to be registered. Nothing required on my end to receive the letter other than the paperwork filled out at the dealer. I have insurance on the car, a valid Alabama driver's license, and proof that I live at my address. Is a copy of the title necessary?
