r/triangle on Reddit: I am shook @ the cost of registering a car in NC
September 5, 2020 -
Just moved here and registered my car today. $650. RIP my bank account.
EDIT: People think it’s because I drive a fancy car - I drive a 2013 Honda CR-V. I’m also a grad student and make ~18k/year, so this really blows.
EDIT: Of course this isn’t all the cost of the actual registration - it’s mostly the highway tax and property tax, which I think for the town I live in is quite high relative to others.

The registration is only $38.75. The rest is annual property tax based on the retail value of the vehicle. I'm actually happy it's done that way because I actually have some control over how much it costs by my choice of vehicle. People who drive new expensive cars pay more and people who drive older and/or cheaper cars pay less.

The initial registration is also the most expensive because you’re paying the HUT. It’s relatively reasonable after that. Though I still only paid $350 for the first registration of my ‘06 Mustang.

NC Car Registration Laws - The Hull Truth - Boating and Fishing Forum
May 13, 2024 - Which allows him to say 'he's using his mom's car to work in VA' My brother is also on the title of my car, and lives in FL in the address on my license which is the address the car is registered to. I'm going to ask around and see if this is a valid work around. I feel like the 'couple hundred' is a bit more than that considering my insurance for NC would end up being $1505 / 6 months. First job out of college, an extra 3k ish unplanned for is a major hit hahaha ... NC is cheaper than FL too but the issue is it'll technically go up as it doesn't seem like it'll bundle anymore with my brother's car in FL which makes it cheaper.
