What would be the overall cost of becoming a certified skydiving instructor (fees, equipment and jumps etc)? - Quora
Answer: Starting from scratch, it takes 25 jumps to become a licensed skydiver. You would take a basic course on the ground for the first jump, which is about 6 hours and would cover the basics of how to jump. Depending on the equipment available, you'd either do a static jump from low altitude (...

It’s my dream to be able to do it for a living but I was wondering if it’s obtainable. You need to define "living". Can you make a paycheck? Yes. But you are not going to have any retirement funded by anyone, you will not have health insurance, and you are going to be making 20-40K a year as a contractor in most states. In the US: You have to first get a license... Figure about 3K dollars. You have to get a coach rating. About 100 jumps and a class with checkout dives. Five IIRC. Call it 1K dollars. Then for Tandem you have to have 500 jumps and three years in the sport. Let's call it 10k dollars because some could be hop n pops and maybe you get a coach rating. You have to have a class 3 FAA medical, about 125 dollars every 5 years (and you can't have any history of drug use, depression, or things like ADHD diagnosis). Some will tell you to just lie, but that is a felony. So for tandems, you will spend close to 20-25K before you can start making money. This does not include cost of living, your gear..etc. All in 25-30K would be reasonable. AFF you only have to have six hours of freefall time. So in theory, you could do it in about 350 jumps. But in the real world it is closer to 800 jumps to have the skills needed. So you class and coach rating, plus the AFF I course... Figure about 15K without factoring your persona gear and any pre training. Next lets talk money! You going to try and move to a full time DZ? Good luck getting a slot. The big buy DZ's don't have to try and find employees, so you will have to figure out a way to work into FT. Even if you get a FT slot at a big SZ, you should figure 800-900 jumps a year. So the pay? About 40 bucks a jump. So 30-40K a year. Oh, but that is as a contractor. So you are responsible for both sides of your Social Security taxes... 12.4% (Normally you pay 6.2% and your employer pays another 6.2%, but as a contractor that is all on you). Now the medicare taxes are 2.9%. So you starting tax rate is basically 15% before we even look at income taxes. Some places pay better, but then they also have a longer list of available employees. Best plan is to work part time. I did Tandems and AFF on weekends for over 20 years and averaged about 8-10K a year. I also had another job that paid me if it was raining, had insurance, had a 401K...etc.

r/SkyDiving on Reddit: Does skydiving really cost that much??
April 27, 2018 -

Might be a stupid question, but does skydiving really cost like 300$ each dive?? I really want to do this, but that sounds crazy. How do some people do 500+ dives if it's that expensive??

Also, what's a jump ticket?

The first step is working towards getting your license. This usually costs ~$2000-3000 and many places will let you prepay to make it cheaper. It includes 7 AFF jumps (with 1 or 2 instructors and gear included) and an additional 18 coach jumps. Once you have a license, it becomes a lot cheaper. Most places will have a single ride up in the plane (one jump ticket) cost somewhere between $15-25. In addition, you either need to rent gear or buy it. Renting costs $30-100 per day, in order to buy a decent parachute and all your own gear, can easily run you another $1,500-5000. This isn't a cheap hobby. Most people either are quite well to do, or are throwing every scrap of free cash they have at the sport. A few things that can save you money along the way include: prepaying for your A license, buying your own gear, and paying for some tunnel time (it will prevent you from wasting money having to repeat a AFF jump early on which can cost $200 each). Later on, people begin making money packing parachutes, or working as a coach to pay off their jumps. Some places also offer passes which can cost $5,000-10,000 but give you unlimited jumps for a year. Just for comparison, I've got 75 jumps and I normally make 3-5 per day plus gear rentals which comes out to ~$200 each day. Skiing at Vail costs $216 for a day now so it's roughly comparable.

Once you have a license and buy your own gear, approximately $20 - 30 a jump. But this 500+ jumps isn't even scratching the surface, I've got friends clean over 18,000 jumps that make me still feel young in the sport with 2,000 jumps.
