I have a set of China from the 1950’s: 10 cups, 11 saucers, 7 plates, 8 bowls, 1 small creamer pitcher, 1 sugar bowl. The whole shebang weighs 19.5lbs. I usually pack and ship things myself, but I’m a bit wary of this one- wondering if it’s worth it to have someone do it for me? I know every store is locally owned, but a ballpark figure would be cool?
Does anyone want to chime in their opinion on pricing and the cost effectiveness of having UPS pack a couple of computer monitors and systems I might sell? In your opinion, is it worth it? Also, with the understanding that all locations charge differently and all computers (all-in-ones and standalones) require different supplies, what are some fees to expect vs doing it myself?
I recently needed to ship an expensive PC part to a buyer in California from NC and i knew prices would be high for doing that plus needing a larger than usual insurance amount for the item im guessing but I didnt expect to pay $198 for it, well it was really $221 with the box and supplies added on so i kinda feel like i got ripped off in a way from that location but asking here for others opinion on it since I may need to ship other expensive items soon.
We had a complex pack job (have had a few similar ones of this size in the past) and we always run into the issue of the customer complaining about packaging cost.
The item was some sort of decorative art piece. The only way I can describe it is similar to an octopus lol. There was a main piece and then 8 or 9 smaller pieces connected to the main one by strings.
We had to individually wrap the smaller pieces and the main piece and secure the strings safely.
It took 3 people a couple of hours. We had to telescope 2 of the 25 cubed boxes. The final dimensions were 51x28x28 and it weighed 60 pounds.
The customer was shipping it from one of her house to her other house on the opposite side of the country. Shipping cost came out to be about $570 (ground). For reference, we are in California and wages are $18 to 23.
For labor and materials, how much would you have charged?
Edit: they ended up not shipping with us because they found the total shipping + packing cost too outrageous but they did pay for packing
If I'm looking to pack AND ship through UPS, let's say an 8x10 canvas print (so, fragile obviously).. What is the ballpark range I'd expect to pay?
Got a 3” diameter by 35” long solid piece of 422 stainless steel I want to ship from Houston to phoenix how much would that cost? About 71 pounds
I’m fairly new to Mercari and I’ve tried googling for a bit and cannot find anything.
I’m trying to sell several Funko Pops and I have someone who wants to buy everything I have listed and I’m trying to figure out shipping costs. I have 24 total and figured the pack and ship option would be my best bet because they do not want me to ship multiple packages. Below are the dimensions to give everyone an idea-
16 @ 6x4.5x3.5 each 1 @ 9.5x7x7 4 @ 6.5x5.5x8 3 @ 13x8x9
I saw there’s a $20 fee from UPS for them to pack and ship, but how do I determine how much shipping will be so I can close this deal? They’re fighting me on shipping charges with the options I’ve given so far. Or if anyone has any other suggestions on the best way to ship this please let me know.
Hey! So the easiest way is to choose either the usps under __ pounds option (depends on the weight) or the FedEx smart post option (which will be slower but cheaper for the buyer). These do not need exact package dimensions as they’re based on weight, just don’t ship a huge package. Also, I would pack it on your own. You’ll save yourself and the buyer a lot of money that way. You can get free USPS priority boxes at the post office and tape those together (if you choose to use USPS), tape at the dollar tree for $1, and bubble wrap for $1 at Walmart.
Mercari shipping prices are fixed. UPS PnS will provide packaging and ship it anywhere for stated $20.
Buy a scale and ship according to weight. For funko pops, USPS sufficient.
I have a relatively small package to ship, (an oculus touch controller). How much does UPS charge to have it packed?
I have never used UPS to pack and ship.
What should I figure for packing a framed 27 3/4" x 20" picture? (packing, box only)
had an older guy come in today wanting to ship a 31x21x16 storage container weighing 62lbs. the contents were family heirlooms, barely enough packaging inside, and filled to the top. i recommended throwing it into a box for a bit more security since he didn’t want to package it. the box was 36x22x22 ($28.95)
ground shipping came out to $260 something. without the box, and just shipping the container was $212.
i told him the price and he immediately got pissed off and acted like i was trying to scam him. saying “so when i looked online your price was $150-170 to ship, why is it different”
i basically said online prices are different from retail prices, but our shipping rates come directly from ups corporate. and he dead stared at me like i shot his dog. and repeated himself about the online price and complained about the box. and stormed out. came back about an hour later with his own label printed and another employee helped him.
is there a better way to explain this price difference? bc he wasn’t understand that we were also a franchise and thought we were literally UPS.
Hey everyone,
I’m looking to understand how UPS Stores determine pricing for their packing services. For those who own or work at a UPS Store, could you share some insight on how you charge for packing? • Are there different pricing tiers based on the level of packing needed (e.g., fragile items requiring extra bubble wrap vs. standard packing)? • How do you calculate the cost—do you charge based on materials used, labor time, or is there a set price configured by corporate? • What materials do you typically use to fill void space in boxes, and does that factor into the pricing? • If labor is considered, do you charge by the hour or is it built into a standard fee?
I’d really appreciate any insights from those with experience. Thanks in advance!
I need to ship out a 5000 card box. I'd rather it be in another box with bubble wrap or something. I was going to take it to UPS later but unsure of how it works. I'd imagine something that heavy and big would be about $20 ground? Will UPS package that into another box for me? Or would I have to pay for it?
We shipped a 1.2lb package in state for $43 and another 1.2lb package out of state for $75. Not to mention they charged us $50 for the boxes and packing them for us.. am I crazy or does this seem super overpriced? I was so stunned I almost asked if they messed something up. Seems so high! Tell me what you guys think!
If you went to a UPS store then probably got screwed lol…my suggestion, pack it yourself, Weight the boxes yourself and then print label from the UPS site. Take it to a UPS hub or a drop off…and call it a day. A lot more work but you’ll save some money
UPS store are individually owned and operated. Not related at all with the UPS that delivers your package. You paid for it so doesn’t seem like it was over priced.
I've been with my current UPS store for two years and i've been a manager for half a year - and i've seen all kinds of crazy stuff. plus, i just had to compete since i saw a Fedex driver AMA.
So, ask away!

Today I went in to ship a 3 wood club I was selling at my local UPS store. Typically I use pirateship to create my labels but I didn’t have a box to ship my club so I decided to create the label there. Prior to this, I used the shipping calculator and it came to around 14$ cheapest. When I came in, the box costed 10$ but the cheapest shipping cost 78$? Why is it so high?
Becoming a good eBay seller entails becoming a good photographer and an expert shipper. So it's not a lack of experience or materials on hand. It's just a super bz week.
Has anyone used the UPS service: Ship n Pack? Was the extra charge an outrage or a bargain? TYIA
