I’m 16 years old and want to get a job. Walmart pays more money than small businesses/stores around my area and I heard it can pay for college tuition, but my mom doesn’t want me to work there because of the type of people in the large store and fears me being a victim of a crime.
I know there are numerous positions, but is it worth it working at Walmart as a teen who would only be able to work weekends? Is it a bad work environment? Would it be difficult for me??? Thanks :)

Plenty of teens work at my store, the risk of you being harmed isn't any higher than working just about anywhere else.

Speaking as a recent Asset Protection Investigator, crime is a problem, but if you live in a typical suburban area, it's usually us that are put at risk. The most I've ever dealt with was someone trying to push their cart into me when I went to detain them. I've also worked at one on i75, and in a pretty bad part of Michigan. The worst that happened is someone threw a bag of rice at me, and tried to run me over, bearing in mind, my job was to actively seek out these criminals. Most don't want to draw attention to themselves, and will leave staff alone. Honestly you're more likely to run into verbal harassment then anything else. Like with any job, make friends, and be aware of your surroundings. As long as your AP team is cool, we are always available to talk about safety concerns.

This whole thing is fucking bullshit. It doesn't directly affect me but I asked my PL today asking how the pay structure was going to be now for I guess new associates. Pretty much instead of having all the positions match what OPD and stocking make (17 for associates and 22 for TLs in my area) they instead chose to bring them down to what the non-opd or stocking associates make (which is 15 and 20). It's fucking bullshit. So why would anyone take the objectively harder position of stocking, either as an associate or a team lead, instead of something considerably easier like any of the salesfloor roles? Bruh I am pissed for both current associates who were burned and didn't get the bump up to 17 or 22 like one would think, and for the new hires who not even a full month ago would have applied for a position that paid 17 and is now going to pay 15. I am pissed for the rehired associates who left at 17 and will come back to 15. How the fuck does this make sense!?!?

I'm from Illinois I don't live in Chicago I live in a small town but I make 17.82 night shift maintenance. The cost of living here is low where I live. But Walmart is the best paying job besides a factory where your mandatory to work overtime and 12 hours 6 days a week so my job is pretty nice and ez and the pay is great.
Omg this blew up thanks for the upvotes. I have come to realize that a lot of you don't make more than what I made when I work to Taco Bell I made $13.50 at Taco Bell and that wasn't enough to live on. I think everyone should make at least 17 and more on night shift.
