I’m redoing the lighting in a small room (about 13x24 feet) and switching to LED. I keep finding mixed answers online—some say 10 watts, others say 40?! 🤔
I want enough brightness for reading and working on laptop, and not feeling like I’m in a dungeon. So… what’s the real wattage I should be aiming for in LED terms? Bonus points if you can recommend color temperature too (warm vs cool). Ceiling mount, no recessed lights. Appreciate any insight before I over- or under-glow this room 😅

It's important to realize LED bulbs have two different wattage ratings. One refers to their actual electrical power draw (and will vary around the 10 W mark), another one is the power draw of an incandescent bulb providing the same amount of light (and it will be around 10 times more). You can also refer to the amount of lumens, which is the unit of brightness and therefore makes the choice by wattage useless (provided you have an idea of how many lumens will give out how much light). Alternatively, use the incandescent equivalent watts figure. The real number of watts is not very useful as a brightness indicator, because LED bulbs consume so little that their wattage is very close. Moreover, efficiency varies from one model to another, which confuses the picture even more. Are you sure about the area of your room ? 13 by 24 feet does not look like a small room to me. I would call that a large one. First of all, to light up such a big room (and to properly light up any room, in fact), you would need several light sources in different places, not a single one. But to give you an idea, I would say that just for a ceiling lamp, you would need two, not one, 100 W-equivalent LED bulbs. Either within the same fixture, or hanging from two different places. Each of them would give out between 1 500 and 1 600 lumens (abbreviation : lm). The actual power draw of each of them would be between 9 W and 13 W, according to brand and model. Especially if you plan to work and read in that room, you need, on top of that, light sources placed at a lower level. Typically, at least a table lamp. If you work on a laptop, you need a lamp bright enough that you can read books and paper documents, but not so bright as to wash out the screen. The typical output for a table lamp would be 60 W-equivalent or 800 lumens. If you want a more cozy ambiance, you can lower the output of the ceiling lamp (or lamps) and rely more on low-height light sources : table lamp or lamps, floor lamps. I work in a room half as large as yours. I have a ceiling suspension which is a 100 W-equivalent, 1 500 lumens (but it's always off). I rely instead on a table lamp (three brightness levels : 800, 400 and 200 lumens) and a floor lamp (1 500 lumens). This gives a very subdued lighting. Most people would switch on the ceiling light, as well. For other activities (dressing, cleaning the room...) the ceiling light would be needed. As for color temperature, 2 700 °K is the standard (warm white) and what I would recommend. Some people prefer 3 000 °K, which is slightly colder. Former halogen tubes had that color temperature.
