Stephen was king of England and duke of Normandy during a period of civil war and anarchy. His monarchy, described by a contemporary chronicler as “nineteen long winters in which Christ and his saints slept,” became a period of anarchy during which Stephen was unable to sustain the peace created by Henry I. Stephen of Blois was the third son of Stephen, count of Blois and Chartres, and Adela, daughter of William the Conqueror. Count Stephen died in 1102, at Ramlah in Palestine, and the children were reared by their mother.
