Hey everyone, I’m a newbie who’s hopefully in the process of doing a domain transfer for the first time.
I made a website for a non-profit and we now need the previous web guy to transfer their domain from his domain registrar to my Godaddy account.
The issue is he keeps getting mad and saying that I have to initialise the transfer before he can do anything but from my understanding, he needs to unlock the domain, get an auth code then confirm and transfer it to me? If I’m wrong please let me know!
I need to know whether I’m right or not in thinking that he has to start the transfer process, not me.
He sent me a link to their website but surely it’s proving my point? If I’m mistaken please let me know, thank you! :)

He has to give you the auth code and unlock the domain. You can initiate a transfer but it will ask for the auth code. He is jerking you around. Ask him for auth code and to unlock the domain name. Then initiate the transfer using the auth code. Trust me, I’ve been at this for thirty years.

dnbrokers is 100% right. And here is more that you can tell the domainer you bought it from who, I'm guessing, has never transferred a domain out before. The auth code tells the new registrar (Godaddy in your case), that you have the authority given to you by the previous owner to transfer the domain in to your account. That's because only the owner of the domain can obtain the auth code to give to you. There's no way you could even get an auth code on a domain you don't own.
