How do I mentally add or subtract (three digits or more numbers) if I can't remember the numbers that I need to add to or subtract?
Mathematics is not about doing calculations with large numbers in your head. Don't waste your energy on that. Use a piece of paper or, even better, a calculator. More on reddit.com
A trick to faster mental math?
The problem is your method is for addition. 500+40 = 501+39. When you're doing subtraction you need to keep the numbers the same distance apart, so you can't borrow numbers. Imagine you and a friend standing 1 meter apart in a line facing the same direction. If you borrowed a step from him then he would take a step backwards and you would take a step forwards, and now you are 1 meter and 2 steps apart because you're moving in opposite directions, which is why when you add 1 to 39 and subtract 1 from 501 you end up with a different number. However if you both stepped forward 1 step the distance between you has not changed, and so if you added 1 to 39 and 1 to 501 the distance is the same. This is the same concept as numbers on a numberline. More on reddit.com
IWTL to have quick mental math abilities (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) before college this fall
I don't have any app recommendations, but I was a server in restaurants for quite awhile and learned to quickly do mental math. It's much easier to do simple math over complicated math, obviously. So it's all about breaking it down. Say you have to add 48 + 37. Instead of thinking of that as one intimidating problem, simplify it. You know to 40 + 30 = 70 8 + 7 = 15 70 + 15 = 85 Now say you are presented with 95 - 46 You can break it down like the addition, or you can round up one of the numbers. 95 - 50 = 45 45 + 4 (because we rounded up from 46) = 49 If you learn at least the quick math for all numbers between 1-9 it's much easier to break it down. Hope this helps! More on reddit.com
What’s a good website or app that I could use to practice knowing my addition and multiplication faster?
Try this website for arithmetic speed drills. You can set it for addition and/or subtraction and/or multiplication and/or division, and also the range of numbers that are allowed to appear in the problems. More on reddit.com
What is addition and subtraction?
Addition and subtraction are two primary arithmetic operations, where we find the sum and difference of two numbers. Addition is denoted by ‘+’ and subtraction by ‘-’. Both are inverse operations of each other. · Example: 5 + 6 = 11 and 11 – 6 = 5

What are the rules of addition?
When we add two positive numbers, it results in a positive value. Adding two negative numbers results in the sum of the two numbers but with a negative sign. If we add two numbers with opposite signs, then it results in subtraction.

Subtraction by Addition (Complements Method)
With a bit of experience the "what adds to 10" or "what adds to 9" becomes automatic, and taking the complement becomes quick and easy. Here is another example where we have to skip over some zeros: ... Now add the two numbers (using column addition), but don't forget to discard the extra "1" on the left. ... After taking the complement we just fill any missing spaces with 9s. Well, the complement of 56 is 44 , but we need to "pad it" out to 4 digits, making it 9944. Now we add them: ... That case would be easier using Quick Subtraction, but it does show how this "complement, add, discard" method works.
