One object can have multiple gradients as seen in the image 1 (below).

To add multiple gradients, open your appearances panel and duplicate the fill. Note that the second gradient has to have a blending mode or transparency for this to work.

Image 1: Two radial gradients in same object.

Does anyone know if you can make multiple linear gradients on the same path on Adobe illustrator for the iPad. I little experience and no formal training with the program. For example, can I add another gradient line with the same colors that would replace the red line on this screenshot?
So you want two gradients? One perfectly horizontal and one at an angle? If so, copy the gradient and paste a new one on top of the first one. Then select the new one with the gradient tool so you can see that gradient path again. And from there, drag the black circle/handle at the end of the gradient line upwards until you get the angle you want. From there I'm guessing you'll want the top gradient to darken the first, so I'd go to the opacity palette and select darken or multiply so the top gradient adds to the bottom. More on reddit.com

Help applying shading gradient across group/layers/multiple shapes
Select all objects and group them. Duplicate the group. Smash 'em into one single shape with the Pathfinder to create a new shape that is the exact size of the thing you're making. Place the new shape above the original group in the layer stack. Select the group and the top shape. Ctrl/Cmd+7 to make a new group with the top shape as a mask for the rest of the group. Add effects and place them in the masked group to have them masked out properly. More on reddit.com

How to blend two gradients?
Not sure if you realize you can apply more than two colors to a gradient. You can turn the Monster logo into a compound shape and apply a single gradient with three instances of purple and three of blue. More on reddit.com

If you were on the desktop version you would do this in the Appearance palette; you can stack up fills and strokes and effects on a single path to your heart's content there. I dunno if the iPad version has that though. I sure don't see its icon anywhere. You'll probably have to duplicate the shape and give the copy a new gradient. October 27, 2025 - You can use the Gradient Annotator to modify the angle, location, and spread of a Linear Gradient and the focal point, origin, and spread of a Radial Gradient. Once the Gradient Annotator appears in the object, you can either use the Gradient panel or the Gradient Annotator to add new color stops, specify new colors for individual color stops, change Opacity settings, and drag color stops to new locations.

May 25, 2021 - In short, the way that you apply a gradient across multiple objects in Illustrator is to make your objects into a Compound Path first, and then apply the gradient. However, there is one important consideration to keep in mind, and that is in the way that compound paths work.

How to Apply Gradients to Multiple Objects
Now, a lot of the times people will create a gradient and people will want to create the gradient but they’ll usually do them individually. If you want them to have the same gradient, there are two ways you can do this. The first way is you select your objects. If we were to go all the way to the gradient panel we click linear, they’ll all have that same gradient.

SOLVED!

Second and preferred solution given by u/AnAvailableHandle in thread

First solution given by: u/SavageAnimator"Select all objects and group them. Add effects and place them in the masked group to have them masked out properly."

while the first solution gives me identical effects, the second solution ended up being more modular

I'm pretty well versed in photoshop, but decided to start learning how to use illustrator to get a better grasp and control of vectors. But, my hair is falling out from trying for a couple of hours trying to figure this one out.

I KNOW there must be an easier way to do this, and would love some help on how to apply a shading gradient over a group or selection of shapes/layers

Here's what I've tried so far

here's the original group/layers shape

I tried making a compound path with all layers/group, but it isn't working the way i want it to

I tried selecting all the layers/group but it's only making a gradient over one layer.

I tried copying the largest object to a new layer, then putting it over the group, and then applying a shading gradient but it's missing some of the parts of the other layers/group
