I’m going on a Europe trip to several different countries in a couple months. I was wondering what the international fees on the Amex gold card would be like. It says there are no international fees by Amex but, merchants may charge their own foreign fees.
What’s everyone’s experience with this traveling abroad? Are there any fees either from Amex or merchants, especially in Europe?

No matter what card you use, some ATMs or Merchants will give you the option to charge in your currency (eg USD). They usually say upfront that there’s like a 5% fee or if they don’t it might be even worse. You always want to decline this and charge in the local currency.

Amex is actually one of the worst cards to use overseas unless you are American. All transactions are first converted to US Dollars with a weighting fee of about 2% and then from UD dollars to pounds with another weighting fee. You will therefore pay about 4 or 5% more for everything than if you used a zero fee credit card such as the Nationwide or Halifax Clarity.

There is an overseas transaction fee of 3% so it not worth it for most people. I always use mine abroad as with the fee included it’s still cheaper than buying Avios with BA and I get more value than I pay.

I made a car reservation in Iceland, and the pending charge came up to $898, when the charge posted, it became $905. !!!
Then I had to cancel the rental the same day, and the car rental in Iceland issued the full refund in ISK. Guess what, Amex only refunded me $898. !!! WTF.
I had to call to get the $7 difference back. They were initially saying I have to deal with merchant about this, like really? But eventually refunded the $7.
I never had this problem with Visa tacking extra $ to hide the foreign transaction fee. If you make a foreign currency charge, make sure to keep an eye on the exchange rate. So no more foreign currency transaction using Amex for me.

I would go crazy if I verified the exchange rate on every transaction when traveling abroad. If you’re worrying about $7 on a nearly thousand dollar transaction while being in Iceland, you aren’t doing it right, or you can’t afford the trip in the first place

I’ve always had fair conversion rates with Amex in other countries. What was charge supposed to be, Icelandic Krona to USD? Amex’s website states 2.234% difference currently. Edit: not sure why we have such penurious comments. It’s their money and if OP wants to be mad at $7 that’s their right.
