Did I Build My DIY Paver Fire Pit Right for a Smokeless Burn?
For a smokeless burn, you *don't* want fresh/cool air intake near the top. You want the fresh/cool air intake at the base, so that by the time the air reaches the holes, it is hot enough to reignite the unspent fuel (smoke). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqF4-zG0W3o I think you can fix it by taking out the bricks that prop up the metal ring above the pavers. May 25, 2003 - Do not make a fire pit out of concrete pavers. It is not safe. They will pop and throw pieces of concrete everywhere when heated. You would need to line the inside of the pit with fire brick or some other refractory material.

September 30, 2025 - Each layer needs 12 stones around the fire pit ring. Check Alignment: Ensure each paver is aligned with the others. Adjust as needed for a uniform look. Secure the Pavers: Press each stone firmly into the sand. This helps them stay in place. Add More Pavers: Continue placing stones until the first layer is complete. Make sure there are no gaps. Inspect the Base: Walk around the pavers to check for stability. Make any necessary adjustments. This first layer is crucial for building a strong and lasting fire pit.

r/landscaping on Reddit: Did I Build My DIY Paver Fire Pit Right for a Smokeless Burn?
March 12, 2025 -

I just built a DIY paver fire pit and want to make sure I did it right, especially if I’m aiming for a smokeless setup. It’s about half in-ground and half above, with three layers of 3.5” tall pavers. I’m planning to add a 1” or 2” topper, and then a steel insert that rests on top of that, leaving about a 0.5”-1” gap between the ring and the paver wall. For the base, I have a 2 sq. ft. limestone stepper block with two bags of lava rock going on top.

I also left two gaps at ground level for airflow, but I’m not sure if they’re too big or just right. Another thing I’m debating is whether I should mortar-seal the inside wall or leave it as is.

Does this sound like a solid setup for a smokeless burn? Should I be making any adjustments to improve performance? Appreciate any advice from those who’ve built similar pits!
