I'm looking to change the email address that I use with my Apple ID. I still have access to the address I'm currently using, but I'm in the process of moving away from it. Because I have so much tied to my Apple ID, I need to make sure I do this correctly...there's a lot that could go sideways if it goes wrong (lots of music, documents in iCloud, etc. that would be painful to lose access to). I know that it's possible to add additional emails to an Apple ID. Would the safest process be to add an additional email, and then make it the primary email? Or is that possible? Thanks for the advice.

I just did it on my phone yesterday. Go to settings, go to your account then to sign in and security. Delete the current email, it will ask you to enter a new one to replace it. It’ll send you a standard verification email and you should be good to go. Enter in your old email as a secondary email if you still need it associated with your account.

I did do this once upon a time and I did it via the web site if I recall. I also recall a bunch of hoops but I didn’t do anything like setting up a second account and switching it to primary or anything like that.

I've had my Apple account for over 10 years and back then I created some dubious and strange iCloud email address.
Now I found out by chance that the current email address can be replaced with a new iCloud address. I'm not sure if this is common knowledge, but I didn't know about it before.
To do this, go to your iPhone settings > click on your name at the top > iCloud > Mail > Addresses > Add Alias and select a new email address > go back to the account overview > Sign-in & Security > The new address should now appear here. Simply click on the address and activate it as your primary email.
Done. This is now your new address for your Apple Account. Your old address will be added as secondary mail so you don't have to worry about incoming emails.

Primary address should probably be a non-iCloud email, in case you ever have to go through account recovery… it’s a pain if you can’t access the email associated with your account

Yeah, it was added fairly recently. You don’t even need to promote an alias, you can go into iCloud Mail settings and type a new primary address. It does take a while for some parts of the ecosystem/App Store to recognize the change and may break some old purchases, but so far nothing major. I also had a bad iCloud email made when I was like 13 and recently changed it since I wanted to leave Gmail for my primary

Yeah, follow these instructions Apple Support it's very straightforward and simple. The only thing that will change is your Apple ID (primary email associated with the account). All your data remains untouched. Just make sure you have, or are changing from, a trusted device, and that you know your password, passcodes, etc.
