i’m setting up my new imac and when i type in my password for the computer at the bottom it has a checkbox that says to “allow my apple id to reset this password”. what does this mean? does it affect my apple id password or is it just for this computer?

It's just for the account on that computer. If you've forgotten the password to your account, you can log in to your Apple ID (now Apple Account on Sequoia) and reset the computer account password. See https://support.apple.com/en-us/102633#appleid

You DEFINITELY want to enable this unless you want to be locked out of your computer forever and have to do a full wipe and rebuild if you forget your password.
