In-app purchases are made through Apple Media Services. This is completely different than Apple Pay (even though you can have a card in Apple Pay and your Apple ID, they are different services). Your in-app purchase will be billed to your parents card if that’s the default for Apple Media Services. Hi everyone! I want to make an in-app purchase, but I’m a bit confused. It takes me right to the screen where I double click and use my Face ID to pay, but I’m not sure which card it’s using. I have my Apple Pay set up to my own debit card, but the card attached to my Apple ID belongs to my parents since I use their Apple Music. I don’t want to charge their card, but charge my own instead. Will it charge my own card if I make an in-app purchase? If not how can I change it to use my card instead? Thank you!! (I have an iPhone 10 and the most recent update!)

This post is two years old, but in case anyone else is in the same situation I’ll put the solution I came up with here: Make sure you already have your apple wallet set up, and you have a card of your own that you want to use to pay for in-app purchases but you can’t add to your apple id because of family share of whatever other reason Buy a digital apple gift card - you can buy it directly from apple but if your card has trouble like mine did you can also buy it digitally from walmart .com etc. Go to the app store, click on your account and then redeem the gift card. The app store will prioritize any credit in your account before charging your apple id card, so as long as you have enough loaded in the account the card won’t be charged. If you don’t want to buy a gift card every time you want to make a purchase, than after your initial in-app purchase check your apple wallet and you should see a new card for your apple account balance, and you can add money to that balance straight through the apple wallet just like you would an IC card using any card you have in your wallet.

I ran into this issue where somebody else's card with "family sharing" was on and I accidentally used my family members card to make an in app purchase. Kinda wish a different payment method was selectable on the spot of the purchase.

I contacted Apple Support, and it turns out I had to add my credit card separately under Settings > [Name] > Payment & Shipping. I was then also able to remove PayPal.
I assumed this wasn't necessary since the credit card was already added in Apple Pay (the Wallet app). Though this worked for App Store purchases, it apparently does not work for subscriptions.
Out of curiosity: does anyone actually have a subscription via Apple Pay itself?

You don’t need to remove an existing payment method or cancel any existing subscription to make a new payment method the default.
On your iPhone, get into Settings -> (your name) -> Payment & Shipping and tap Edit. Than move the order icon (three parallel bars) for your preferred payment method to the top.
