r/overclocking on Reddit: Question about Limiting CPU temp in BIOS
July 11, 2020 -

Asus 490-E with 10700k

My Bios has an option to cap heat on the processor (Auto is 100). I lowered it to 90.

I'm using a Dark Rock Pro 4, which is fine for gaming/streaming but it can't keep up with my stress test with voltage over 1.3v. I really want to hit 51ghz and it's stable while gaming/streaming and temps are low. But I want to be sure there are no errors. I want to check for errors but I don't want to damage anything while stress testing (hence the 90 limit).

If I stress test OCCT with a heat limit, the core multiplier is being throttled to keep the heat at 90. It drops from 51 to 40s then right back up. I ran it for 5 minutes like this and got no errors but I stopped it. So my question is, can I leave OCCT running for hours like this to test for errors anyway? Nothing is being damaged by running with the heat throttle constantly being activated? Could it still catch some errors or is the test entirely pointless with the heat throttle?

r/gigabyte on Reddit: How do I change maximum temperature for AMD CPU in bios?
October 25, 2024 -

Title is pretty self-explanatory. I am using the Gigabyte A620I AX Mini ITX AM5 Motherboard and for the life of me I cannot find any settings in the bios to change the maximum temperature like you can in AMD Ryzen Master. If there is no maximum temperature option in the bios, where do I throttle the CPU? Every single tutorial and video I found online is for gigabytes old bios UI in this motherboard is using a completely different UI and itโ€™s super confusing.

Hidden BIOS tweaks to slash your power usage and temperatures
July 30, 2025 - You can head into the BIOS and lower these limits to cut down on the power your Intel CPU consumes. Usually, you'll find your PL1 set to your chip's TDP, but you can reduce it slightly, test the stability in your favored workloads, and experiment with different values before finalizing one. ... Undervolting your CPU is one of the best ways to drop temperatures without losing performance.

When you're in UEFI/BIOS the CPU will be constantly running at base clock speeds and is not going to be put into a low power state. This is why you see people say it runs warmer in UEFI/BIOS because the CPU won't go into lower power state. The reason why UEFI/BIOS doesn't do this is: Keeps the code simpler Makes sure that the CPU is configured for its base clock speed, which suggests that at the bare minimum it's working Useful as a sanity test for cooling (if the CPU temps are too high for comfort, you know there's something wrong with the cooler) However in the flip side of things, in the OS, the CPU is allowed to turbo boost, which in Ryzen processors if a core is boosting, will always make it look like the CPU is hot. This is because Ryzen CPUs report the hottest thing as the CPU temperature, even though the entire processor may be hovering at a much lower temperature. If you want to see if boosting is causing the system to idle at a higher temperature, then do the following: Open a command prompt as an administrator Type in powercfg -attributes sub_processor perfboostmode -attrib_hide Open the Start Menu and in the search bar, type in "Edit power plan" Click on "Change advanced power settings" In the pop-up window, go to "Processor power management" -> "Processor performance boost mode" -> set the "Setting" to "Disabled" You should see the CPU is now limited to the base clock speed.

I wonder if there is anything that can be done about this? Seems like it shouldn't be trying to boost when sitting idle. Could it be a deeper issue or is this just a feature of the chip? There is no noticeable difference in temps with any other setting (enabled, aggressive, efficient enabled, efficient aggressive, aggressive at guaranteed, efficient aggressive at guaranteed) Typically what you'd see with Ryzen processors is a periodic spiking of temperatures. There's still tasks to do while idling, but Windows will tend to clump them up all at once and send it to 1-2 cores for processing, which causes those cores to boost hard. If the temperatures aren't dropping while idling, it could mean there's something always firing off.
