What temperature should my CPU be?
When idle, most CPUs should sit between 30°C–50°C (86°F–122°F). Under load (gaming or heavy tasks), aim for 60°C–85°C (140°F–185°F).

r/Windows10 on Reddit: CPU temps task manager
January 3, 2022 -
We now have had gpu temperatures within task manager for a while, so why not add cpu temperature, very handy for when you occasionally check stats, for example i noticed my gpu idle temp had increased by 10c, opened the side panel to notice an intake fan was jammed. Would save me installing core temp etc
Not sure if developers are in this group but I’m sure many will agree. Thoughts?

No. Not because I'm against CPU temperatures being visible, but there are side effects that are wholly undesirable. GPU temperaturee was added to Task manager because it was safe to do so; GPU temperature features were added to WDDM 2.4, so a driver supporting that can be queried for the temperature information in a relatively risk-free manner. No such "API" exists for retrieving the temperatures of other sensors. They differ between manufacturers. sensor data is retrieved first by figuring out what sensors exist by probing the hardware. Knowing the hardware and what integrated sensors it has, known I/O Ports can be used to read and interpret the temperature data. The "risk" however is that this probing has a potential to cause problems. I've seen bluescreens from temperature-reading software just in the process of probing for the sensors. In some cases even running lm-sensors can cause a kernel panic. Needless to say, the potential that task manager of all things, could cause a bluescreen is pretty unacceptable! Of course that was the case for GPUs as well. So adding things like CPU temp would require the driver model would need to be updated such that system drivers can provide temperature information (chipset?) before it would be reasonable to add to Windows Task Manager.

Actually this information is given to OS by the BIOS, but you will need an application to expose the information. You can find a lot of applications to do this:
- Realtemp
- CPU thermomether
- Core Temp

Windows doesn't expose this information out of the box - you need to install any of a myriad of tools to find it. (For something lightweight, I like Open Hardware Monitor.)

How to check your PC's CPU temperature | PCWorld
February 18, 2026 - If your PC starts spontaneously shutting down, locking up, or acting sluggish during intense tasks, overheating could be the issue, especially when the intense summer heat is scorching. Keeping tabs on your CPU temperatures is crucial when you’re overclocking your PC’s processor, too—you don’t want to accidentally push the performance pedal too far to the metal when you’re supercharging your pricey (but worth every penny) Ryzen 7 9850X3D, after all. Bizarrely, Windows doesn’t offer any way to check your computer’s CPU temperature.
