How to clean wooden table? Any recommendations on how to protect the wood from stains and scratches?
It depends on what kind of finish it has...but I clean my wood tables with just a damp sponge (damp with water) and then I dry with a soft towel. If I want to polish it, I use a little lemon oil (polish/buff with a soft cloth). As far as protecting it from scratches...be careful about putting things on the table that has a rough/unfinished bottom (like the bottoms of plates, baking dishes etc) - I use trivets underneath any baking dishes. I always use place mats at each seat/for each person, or a tablecloth. Stains? You shouldn't have too much of a problem with stains, but wipe up any spills immediately. I don't typically use coasters myself...but that's something else you might want to do, especially with mugs that might have hot liquids in them (or drinking vessels that have rough bottoms). October 25, 2022 - That oil mark pictured above took a few more passes than the rest of the table, and I had to add a little pressure while working on that spot. I like to tilt the sander just a bit so I can use the edge of the pad on problem spots like this. After sanding, you'll want to do a good cleaning to remove all of the dust before staining or treating the wood surface.
