My first card was a discover secured credit card I opened 8 years ago, after my first 6 months I got back my $200 and received a $1750 credit limit, a year later it was raised to $2750, since then every year and ahalf or so I request a credit limit but get rejected immediately.
I have never had a late payment on any account ever. My utilization was never more than 30% My credit score is 792 My net annual income is 90k My credit on Chase is 26k My credit at Amex is 20K
I think I'm done with discover, I can't see a reason to keep my account open (I have enough other cards with established history).
This morning we got a notice that our Discover accounts had been locked due to unusual activity. We just bought a house and have been making some larger purchases for things like appliances, new carpet, etc., so we figured it had just been flagged. I called Discover and they told me my account had been closed and they would mail me the remaining balance in 60-90 days…We have over 15k in that account and they’ve said there’s no way for me to access it. I can’t even log in to check the balance. The fact that it will take that long to get the money blows my mind. Thankfully we have another account at a different bank for an emergency fund (I guess this qualifies as an emergency), but Discover was our primary account that all our bills, day to day expenses, direct deposit, etc went through. We’ve already started changing direct deposits over to the other bank and will continue to do so with bills. Has anyone else had this happen? Is there anything we can do? How can I prevent this from happening in the future with other banks? Thanks for any advice.
Edit: it’s now been 62 days since Discover notified me that accounts were being closed, and we still don’t have our money back. I talked to Discover yesterday, who said we would receive our balance by 60 days after the last deposit which was approximately 50 days ago. I asked how a deposit was made if the accounts were closed, and they said deposits will still go through. None of this makes sense. I’ve since out in complaints to the CFPB and FDIC.
Sorry if this sounds uneducated, but I am in this world since I'm still quite young and new to credit. Discover told me they can close my cc account for having 1 collection and 1 charge-off on my credit report. Even if I start paying these things off slowly if my account isn't at 0 by the time for review they can close my discover even though I am at 100% on-tome payments and I'm only at 300$ of 1500 being used.
Does this sound right? I'm upset I had this account since a teenager and I find it so unfair all the hard work I did to build my credit score from 520 to 660 only for this to happen.
Anyway to fight this?
Just opened one. What has been everyone’s experience? I opened it due to the higher interest return. Thanks in advance.
