r/DIY on Reddit: Converting propane fire pit to natural gas fire pit
December 25, 2020 -
I recently converted my old fire pit from propane to NG. Luckily, I found the orifice that had come with the original fire pit for a NG conversion, so that part was easy. But I was still getting a lot of blue flames coming from the burner. I realized that if I cover the two ventilation holes at the bottom of the burner stem where the orifice shoots the gas, I get the yellow flames I want. Is this dangerous or acceptable? My understanding is that propane gas is heavier than air and requires those ventilation holes, but it may be ok to cover them up when using natural gas to get the yellow flames. Thanks

Have you tried researching your particular pit for this question? In general you’re right, propane is heavier than air and will settle where as natural gas wants to dissipate up into the surrounding atmosphere. While you should be ok with your setup, I would recommend identifying your pit by make and model if possible and researching the specifics for it when converting.

Thanks for your responses. I've tried researching for my specific make/model fire pit, but haven't found any info regarding conversion other than the pit cam with a separate orifice (has bigger hole) for the natural gas conversion. I put the new orifice after connecting to natural gas, but wasn't happy with the fire itself, as it produced mostly blue flames. The only way I was able to achieve my desired yellow flames was to cover up the air inlet holes underneath. I just wasn't sure if it posed a danger. I tried asking this question in other forums, but only got responses in the form of people yelling at me for doing this type of conversion without being licensed. It's not rocket science, I just want confirmation that I'm not putting myself at risk.

July 26, 2024 - To light your fire pit, you have two options: a standard butane stick lighter or a spark igniter. The spark igniter mounts into the drop-in burner pan using the optional plate that came with the pan. There are many natural gas connection kits available. Our Celestial Natural Gas Connection Kit includes the hoses and key valves needed to make your gas connection.

August 30, 2024 - The orifices they sell are for grills, but what you could do is try it out with the current orifice size for your fire pit, and if it’s not sufficient, drill them out to 0.080” (the size of the new orifices that I purchased for my grill). Make sure to use gas tape on the threads, and check for leaks with soapy water once it’s all hooked up before using it. Edit: it looks like the site is now called Grill Parts Replacement More replies More replies ... You don't because the orifice is different for propane and natural gas.

Answer (1 of 2): In a home, brazed connections. You could use vinyl pipe tape, but it ages over time and sooner or later will leak. Outside a home, threaded or quick change connections are good enough.
