How to Install Google Analytics 4 in 2025 (3 Ways)
October 13, 2025 - Think of it this way: Google Tag Manager’s Preview mode confirms that your tags are firing correctly on your website. It answers the question, “Did my website tell GTM to send an event?”. GA4’s DebugView, on the other hand, confirms that Google Analytics received the data from GTM. It answers the question, “Did GA4 hear what GTM sent?”. You must use both tools to confirm the connection is working from end to end.

r/GoogleAnalytics on Reddit: How Do I Hook Up Existing Google Tags From Google Tag Manager To Google Analytics?
December 13, 2023 -

Hello there,

I have done quite a bit of research and am very confused. More so because the documentation is all over the place and Google Analytics itself is menu diving hell in its own right.

That being noted, I have an existing website that we configured with Google Tag Manager so that any tags created with Google Tag Manager would be used automatically, and would help store page view events, click events etc.

My main thing is this:

  • How do I hook the existing Google Tag Manager tags so that when they are triggered, they send data to an existing 'Data Stream' that exists on Google Analytics?

I ask this because it looks like you have to not only create a duplicate tag on the Google Tag Manager side to specifically use Google Analytics, but when I do so, it wants the measurement ID and complains that it's not present in the container even when I put this value into the related field.

Do I have to add yet another Google Tag that specifies the Google Analytics measurement id value somehow?

On top of that, if I find the Data Stream section and look to add a custom event, the event section itself on Google Analytics wants its own triggers, which defeats the purpose of defining the triggers on the Google Tag Manager side.

Really, ideally, I just want it so that when a Google Tag Manager based tag fires, it just sends the data to Google Analytics.

Otherwise, I have found this process to be pretty damn difficult, frustrating, and stupidly hard for someone who knows a ton about tech and computers.

Tagging for Google Analytics | Google for Developers
For details on the Google tag, Tag Manager and gtag.js products, see the Tag platform documentation. The Google tag is a single tag you can add to your website to measure organic and ad performance. You can configure a Google tag for Google Analytics, and send the data from that tag to other products, like Google Ads, by adding destinations to your tag.
