Yes this is true. iCloud is a very helpful service provided by Apple in this sense. As long as you are not signed into an iCloud account for photos, and you do not fully factory reset the phone, the photos will remain.

Here are the steps to transfer your Apple ID (adapted from from readdle.com):

Part I: Sign Out of Apple ID on iPhone or iPad

Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad Tap the Apple ID Name & Photo at the top of the screen. Scroll down a bit and then tap the Sign Out link. If you use the same account for iCloud and the iTunes Store, you’ll be asked to enter your Apple ID password. If you use two different accounts, you’ll be given three options:

  • Sign Out of iCloud and iTunes Store

  • Sign Out of iCloud

  • Sign Out of iTunes Store

Select which data from iCloud you want to keep on the device and which data you want to delete using the toggle switches. Tap Sign Out again to remove the Apple ID from your iPhone or iPad.

Part II: Sign In with a Different Apple ID on your iPhone or iPad.

Now that you have managed to remove the Apple ID that was previously being used on an iPhone or iPad let us now see how you can Sign In with a different Apple ID on the iOS device.

Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap the Sign in to your iPhone/Sign in to your iPad link at the top of the screen. If you see a Name or Photo here, follow the steps outlined in Part I above. Enter the email address or phone number associated with the different Apple ID you want to sign in with. Then enter your Apple ID password. If you already have some data on your device, such as Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, etc., you will be asked if you want to Merge that data with this new Apple ID you are Signing In with. Tap Merge if you want to merge data. Otherwise, tap Don’t Merge.

r/applehelp on Reddit: How do I make a new apple ID?
November 28, 2024 -

Okay so here’s the situation: My Mom and Dad share the same apple ID which makes both their phones basically be seen as one. (Stupid, I know. But they did that back when I didn’t even know what apple was) Though they do have their own photos and whatsapp chats, for example.

Now we want to separate her phone with the current apple ID to get her own, but I‘ve seen a bunch of different ways to do it, but none of them really fit the situation.

My question is, what is the best way to separate the phones + make a new ID for my moms phone WITHOUT losing all her data?

Help is much appreciated and thank you 🙏🏻

June 25, 2025 -

Hey, so a former employee used his company cell phone number to create an Apple ID. After he left the company and we gave the phone number to a new employee he can't create an Apple ID with this phone number as it is already used by a different Apple ID.

Is there any way to create a new Apple ID for the new guy so he can download apps on his iPhone?

Solved: See my comment.

Hopefully you will not then encounter a related issue to your first one which is this next "cannot set up" message: ● A "Could Not Set Up iCloud" message means you have created Apple Accounts on certain platforms that need to be set up in iCloud too, but you have reached an annual per-device limit for doing this. See the recommendations in the link under "What you should do" for using a different device to set up iCloud accounts, using an account that is already set up, or by contacting Apple Support:
