I've been putting off doing this for years, and now that I'm finally trying to set up my professional life it kinda feels like I've missed the boat. Everything I'm reading says you used to be able to do this with gmail, outlook, zoho and others, but now when I look at all those it seems you have to pay for them. To be clear, what I'm talking about here is just setting up an email address like "[email protected]." I already own and pay for the domain myname.me. All these services I check want to charge me around 10 bucks a month just to have my custom email address. I've never paid a cent for email in my life so that seems outrageous--plus I'm just trying to launch my career so I can't really afford it either.

Anyone have any suggestions for me? Sorry, I don't know a better place to ask this, but I figure someone here will know what the best option is currently.

Depending upon your registrar you can forward email out to a free gmail account, google just makes it easy.

That being said I thing google apps is worth it.

Depends on where you buy your domain, one business mail could be included. For example, my customers buy often their domains at "ionos", a german domain hoster. After buying a domain there, you can choose one business mail for free. I'm sure there are similar offers in your country.

So I have researched about self hosting your own email server such as Mailcow but it seems pretty divided on whether or not you should do it due emails potentially not getting delivered due to spam filters and such. So I'm kinda not interested in self hosting so I'm wondering what is the next best option to get my own email ideally for free but maybe settle for really cheap?

For email, I use MXRoute . They're especially affordable if you snag them on sale , which they have now and then . One possible option would be to use Cloudflare's free email forwarding to a regular (free) gmail account, and set that gmail account to send all outgoing mail via MxRoute (using Gmail's "send-as" feature), or though any other mail sending servie with a free tier, with your personal domain; I also setup a mail rule in Gmail to flag/tag all email that was sent directly to the gmail address, so I would notice it.

Quite some years ago, Google offered free customized email with domain name for free, later on Google started charging fee.

Late 2023, Google Domains was sold to Squarespace, I am in the process of moving domain from squarespace to porkbun.

There’s no free service that I am aware of for custom domains. However you can buy a custom .com from namesilo for $8 for the year. Zoho let’s you setup a free inbox. You’ll just need to setup your dns for the mx records. It’s pretty easy. I use cloudflare for dns. Point the domain from namesilo to cloudflare, in cloudflare add the mx records from zoho. If you wanted more function you could buy the domain and signup for google apps for business. Only $6 a month.

I have my own domain, but no website. I just use aliases. so [email protected] is what customers see but really I'm just using gmail. I don't know if this something that all registrars or whatever you call them use, but http://domains.google makes it really easy.

Far too often I see people posting their gmail, hotmail or ISP email address on signage, business cards, vehicles, etc. This locks you in to a potentially costly and compromising situation if you decide to move, change ISPs or your service provider goes out of business. For a relatively low yearly fee you can get your own domain name and have it forwarded to any provider you like. Boost your company profile!

I am always shocked when I see business cards with an ISP email address on it. Even gmail is better than that, but come on, a domain name is so cheap it is stupid not to have one. I have one and no business whatsoever.

My parents literally just had this happen with their ISP email address. They upgraded to business class Internet, and found out they weren't able to keep their old email addresses because of it. I think they ended up buying a domain and switching everything over. As for Gmail, I'd say it's pretty stable. It's run by a company that doesn't have any intention of leaving the web space any time soon, and too many people use it for it to be realistic to close. At least you don't run the risk of losing your email when you upgrade your service.

As someone above mentioned Zoho is free to host your email servers, but you will still need to buy a domain. So get your domain with namecheap.com (which is the cheapest option), then set your email up with Zoho the free version.

You can try zoho, but I'd recommend buying a hostinger domain, and using their email hosting server, as that rids you of complications and is a much more effective and organised inbox.

I'm looking to start using my own domain for emails (personal use) and I have a couple of domains I could use ("first" and "last" refer to first name and last name):

If I go with firstlast.com, what would be the best thing to put before the "@"?

Hello guys, so I've changed from gmail to protonmail and I *think* I want to step over to own domain.

Currently I'm using something like this:

I’d check out NameSilo before NameCheap. It’s cheaper and last I checked got higher ratings. Go ahead and use G-Suite for your email and calendars. If you can’t afford $6/month your business has much larger issues. The benefit here is that your calendar also works with your customers, not just your internal staff. Having some sort of web presence is good - because let’s face it, everyone is checking there first before moving forward. It’s just the nature of the beast now. Lots of options here... figure out what works best for you.

Yes but there are providers out there that will block your domain as spam if there is no resolveable domain. So you need some kind of page somewhere or your emails will go direct to spam or bounce back without it.
