No. Someone has to own the domain and control its DNS records for your email service to work and I would highly recommend that it's you who owns the domain for your own business. Letting anyone else control the domain for your business is a very bad idea. If you're not comfortable setting this up yourself, you could hire a consultant to set it up for you (but ensure you are the owner of the domain and you have control of the registrar account). r/techsupport on Reddit: How do I create a custom domain email?
January 21, 2020 -

I joined a non profit organization recently. The president wants me to find out how we can get an email with our orgs name. I.e. [email protected]

We do have a website (through wix.com)

I tried googling but my tech terminology is bad and so I'd just end up confused.

Please help and thanks

First, look at how your Domain Name Service (DNS) records are setup. Do you own your domain? ie could you take your domain name away from WIX and setup on another provider? The only reason for asking this is to identify just how much you can work with customising your domain. You can go to any email provider, and they will ask you to edit the Mail eXchange (MX) record in your Domain Name Service (DNS) control panel of the company that is holding (or Hosting) your Domain Name Record. You will have to prove that you own the domain, by adding a TeXT (TXT) record in to your DNS Zone here is the knowledge base article on how to edit WIX DNS records. https://support.wix.com/en/article/editing-dns-records-in-your-wix-account Non profits can get free email through Microsoft Office 365. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/nonprofit/office-365-nonprofit-plans-and-pricing?activetab=tab:primaryr1 From never having done it before, it would take you approx 45 minutes to read up on how to do it, and 30 minutes to do it, the second time will take about 10 minutes. there will be a period of waiting, as each record has a Time To Live (TTL) during which time, servers don't ask again for the information (normally held in minutes, some have a TTL of 5 minutes, some of 1 hour, some 1 day. some DNS hosts update on the hour so if you edit something at 3.05, you would have to wait until 4.00 to "see" the change on the internet. a website mxtoolbox.com can show you how some are setup. for example, the following link shows how the redcross.org email setup is configured using office365. https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=mx%3aredcross.org&run=toolpage Here is the step by step for you. https://hostadvice.com/how-to/how-to-set-up-email-hosting-with-microsoft-office-365/ another step by step from microsoft themselves for editing WIX records is https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/admin/dns/create-dns-records-at-wix?view=o365-worldwide GMail has similar offerings, although of the 700 different organisations the company I work for looks after, none are using the g-suite stuff. https://www.google.com/nonprofits/offerings/apps-for-nonprofits/ and this link shows how to setup in gmail. https://help.ecatholic.com/article/154-set-up-g-suite-nonprofit I hope that this helps. Also I have Capitalised the main search terms you might need to look into what I have suggested. Edit #9 kept adding stuff i found Edit#10 Wow. Thanks for the gold!

A note about Wix (I just started using them for something about a month ago): The company seems to be okay, but their ecosystem has attracted a lot of scammers. Beware people offering to help you, but later turning out to be paid consultants. Beware of phishing attempts (I received one on reddit, in r/wix ). Don't give your Wix credentials to anyone. Don't click on any "link to Wix Support" or whatever on reddit or in emails or private messages.

August 5, 2013 -

I've been putting off doing this for years, and now that I'm finally trying to set up my professional life it kinda feels like I've missed the boat. Everything I'm reading says you used to be able to do this with gmail, outlook, zoho and others, but now when I look at all those it seems you have to pay for them. To be clear, what I'm talking about here is just setting up an email address like "[email protected]." I already own and pay for the domain myname.me. All these services I check want to charge me around 10 bucks a month just to have my custom email address. I've never paid a cent for email in my life so that seems outrageous--plus I'm just trying to launch my career so I can't really afford it either.

Anyone have any suggestions for me? Sorry, I don't know a better place to ask this, but I figure someone here will know what the best option is currently.

Hey everyone, I didn't know in which subreddit to ask this question so if there is a more appropriate one please forward me there. If this one is okay as well, I thought since most of you do a lot of Web development, you could possibly help me out.

What I'm in need of is a custom domain name for the emails for my business. What I've gathered so far is that I need to buy a domain and I should also have an email service provider connected to that domain?

I've checked out Google Workspace and it seems like it has everything except annual payment which I would prefer. Are there any other good options besides Google Workspace that would be simple to set up and would have an annual payment option. What would your advice be? Any help is appreciated, thank you! :)

Yes, you are correct in thinking that you will need to purchase a domain name and an email service provider to create custom email addresses for your business. There are many different options available for both of these things, and the best one for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences. In terms of email service providers, Google Workspace (formerly known as G Suite) is a popular choice, but it does not offer an annual payment option. However, there are other options out there that do offer annual payment plans, such as Microsoft 365 and Zoho Mail. Both of these options include a variety of tools for email, collaboration, and productivity, and they allow you to create custom email addresses with your own domain name. When it comes to purchasing a domain name, you can do this through a domain registrar such as GoDaddy, Namecheap, or 1&1 Ionos. These companies will allow you to search for and purchase a domain name that is available and meets your needs. Once you have purchased your domain, you will need to connect it to your email service provider so that you can create custom email addresses using that domain. In summary, to set up custom email addresses with your own domain name, you will need to: Purchase a domain name through a domain registrar Sign up for an email service provider that offers annual payment plans Connect your domain to your email service provider Create custom email addresses using your domain name I hope this helps. Good luck with your business!

Depends on where you buy your domain, one business mail could be included. For example, my customers buy often their domains at "ionos", a german domain hoster. After buying a domain there, you can choose one business mail for free. I'm sure there are similar offers in your country.

r/selfhosted on Reddit: Best way to get [email protected] for free or cheap?
October 12, 2023 -

So I have researched about self hosting your own email server such as Mailcow but it seems pretty divided on whether or not you should do it due emails potentially not getting delivered due to spam filters and such. So I'm kinda not interested in self hosting so I'm wondering what is the next best option to get my own email ideally for free but maybe settle for really cheap?

Edit: I have my own domain already.

Edit2: Thank you all! I have my domain with Cloudflare so I have tried their email routing but would like to be able to send from it too. I'll check out some other suggestions.

Edit3: Wow this got a lot of replies. Again thanks all for the recommendations. I haven't had a chance to actually check any out yet (busy weekend) but I will get to it.

Edit4: So I've had a little time to look at some of the options and it looks like maybe Zoho, onepoundemail or PurelyMail. They are both fairly cheap and around the same price. Anyone know how they compare?

Edit5: I ended up paying for Zoho for $12/year. So far it's doing everything I wanted and more. Very happy with it! Thank you all!!!

This is not self-hosting related but If all you need is *@domain.tld (wildcard and any number of emails) without the ability to send out emails easily, try Cloudflare Email routing , this will forward all emails received on *@domain.tld (amy@domain, [email protected] ) to another of your existing email (can be gmail or proton mail or any other email address). if you need 1 to 5 inbox with easy setup and limited storage, try Zoho mail Forever Free plan* : Easy setup, Five free inbox with 5GB/User on custom domain. Can send and receive email compared to Cloudflare Email routing. Outlook - E5 developer account: Microsoft offers E5 developer account to Developers for 3/4 months, you can get 1 easily and as long as there are some developer activity, it will renew itself. (Not recommended) Skiff mail: Easy setup, 1 inbox with send and receive on custom domain (10GB storage on free), they also have refer bonus edit: clarifying cloudflare email routing and E5 Developer account recommendation edit2: skiff announced that it will discontinue its email service as of 16/02/2024 edit3: Zoho Forever free plan and cloudflare email routing clarification edit4: Zoho has started restricting their free forever email services. For now, it is "Available only in select data centers"

For email, I use MXRoute . They're especially affordable if you snag them on sale , which they have now and then . One possible option would be to use Cloudflare's free email forwarding to a regular (free) gmail account, and set that gmail account to send all outgoing mail via MxRoute (using Gmail's "send-as" feature), or though any other mail sending servie with a free tier, with your personal domain; I also setup a mail rule in Gmail to flag/tag all email that was sent directly to the gmail address, so I would notice it.

Quite some years ago, Google offered free customized email with domain name for free, later on Google started charging fee.

Late 2023, Google Domains was sold to Squarespace, I am in the process of moving domain from squarespace to porkbun.

Maybe I should post this question before deciding domain transfer. I am not sure if it is possible to get free or cheap customized email with my domain name?

Far too often I see people posting their gmail, hotmail or ISP email address on signage, business cards, vehicles, etc. This locks you in to a potentially costly and compromising situation if you decide to move, change ISPs or your service provider goes out of business. For a relatively low yearly fee you can get your own domain name and have it forwarded to any provider you like. Boost your company profile!

May 9, 2022 -

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but I'd imagine many people here are using their own domain to host their emails.

I'm looking to start using my own domain for emails (personal use) and I have a couple of domains I could use ("first" and "last" refer to first name and last name):

firstlast.com

first.me

If I go with firstlast.com, what would be the best thing to put before the "@"?

[email protected]? This one is safe and professional but has redundancy.

[email protected]? I'm not sure how this comes across to people?

Or

[email protected]? This would be the shortest but I don't know how well the ".me" works with various services or how likely it is to end up in junk.

[email protected] looks weird to me.

Unfortunately, I have a popular surname so I can't get [email protected], and even the available uncommon tld's for last.tld are either weird or very expensive.

Hello friends!

Want to use a professional email address with your custom domain (like [email protected]) but don’t want to pay for Google Workspace? You can set this up for free using Cloudflare and Gmail. Here’s how:

  1. Get a Domain – Buy a domain from any provider (e.g., Namecheap, GoDaddy, etc.). Having your own domain adds a lot of professionalism to your emails!

  2. Set up Cloudflare – Add your domain to Cloudflare for free DNS management. It’s super simple and will keep your domain running smoothly.

  3. Set Up Email Forwarding with Cloudflare – Cloudflare offers free Email Routing. This lets you forward emails sent to your domain (like [email protected]) directly to your Gmail inbox.

    • In Cloudflare, go to Email Routing and create a custom email that forwards to your Gmail account.

  4. Send Emails from Gmail with Your Domain – To make sure you can send emails from your custom address, set it up in Gmail:

    • Go to Settings > Accounts and Import > Send mail as in Gmail, and add your custom email. Configure it using Cloudflare’s SMTP settings.

Why This Is a Game-Changer: Using an email with your project’s or startup’s domain name adds credibility and professionalism to your communications. It makes your project look polished and serious—plus, it’s free! Why not take your branding to the next level?

Now, you can send and receive emails from your custom domain in Gmail without paying extra! Let’s make your startup look pro from day one. 🚀

Hello guys, so I've changed from gmail to protonmail and I *think* I want to step over to own domain.

Currently I'm using something like this:

[email protected] - Personal /Banking account

[email protected] - Gaming / Twitch / Steam etc account

I see a lot of people using custom domainst, but I have a some questions.

  1. Is possible that someone steals my domain or get my email redirecting to them ?

  2. Is the price of the domain going to be the same or higher ?

  3. In protonmail can I do (imagine) 100 alias to the email or I need to pay more than the plus?

  4. Is the whois privacy safe? Or do i need to cheat in the real information?

  5. I've seen that some people get their domain hijacked by a company, is that easy to do with every domains? I'll be getting a .me

  6. Is the only "disadvantage" is that we always have to pay it?

No, unless they hack your login to the nameserver/registry you are using. Make sure to setup 2FA. Than what? Not a proton user but I thought they don't allow alias forwarding there, unlike Gmail for example Yes it's safe Same as #1. Well, that plus risk from running your own server which includes what happens if your server is unreachable. You can look into MX backup services that let you point to them for your mx2 second priority listing, and they'll hold mail then deliver to your primary MX when it's back up. Having been self hosted before, I honestly prefer to pay for Exchange hosting from Appriver (or etc) but that's just me and my business needs.

Yes and yes Usually remains the same. Some registrars are cheaper than others Edit: I don't know, I tried to skip this but the rendered markdown renumbered my list (1-2, 4-6 magically becomes 1-5 when rendered) Yes It happens, if you fail to renew your domain it'll eventually end up being resold. If someone else buys the domain and sets up an email server, all your email will go to them. If you're being targeted, people have successfully taken control of other peoples domains briefly, and that will allow them to hijack your email . Email is hard to get right. Pitfalls include: ending up blacklisted (straight to spam/reject pile), getting your server compromised due to misconfiguration or an unpatched vulnerability (different from losing control of your domain)... Other side effects include more spam in your inbox, difficulty with some sites, etc.

I have a small company that doesn't require any web presence, however I communicate with clients and I think it'll be more professional to have a real email [[email protected] instead of [email protected]]

I've worked for companies that provided me a company email that I accessed through gmail, which is amazing. I found this link through google. https://digital.com/blog/create-email-using-gmail/

is this the correct way to do it? Forward all emails from my company to my gmail?

Also I want to create a really simple, super cheap landing page just so when people click on mycompany.com it doesn't just go to nothing. Do you guys have any recommended, inexpensive ways to purchase a domain and create a website for someone with 0 website design capabilities?

Thank you!!

Edit: thank you for all of your replies!!! I am so appreciative. I didn't want to spam every single reply with a thank you so just one big giant thank you! I'm going to read through all the suggestions this week!
