Well, those are frequencies, which tell you how many of each number there are. So there are two 1’s, five 2’s, eight 3’s, etc. The total number of observations (n) is the sum of all the frequencies. Multiply each number by its frequency, add those all up, and then divide by n. n = 2+5+8+12+12+0+1 = 40 Σxƒ(x)=1(2)+2(5)+3(8)+4(12)+5(12)+6(0)+ 7(1) = 151 x̄ = 151/40 = 3.775 Answer from Away-Reading on reddit.com

How to Find the Mean, Median, and Mode
1 month ago - The mean is found by adding all numbers together and dividing by how many numbers there are. The median is the middle number in a list sorted from smallest to largest or the average of the two middle numbers if the list has an even number of scores.

How to calculate the mean from range and median?
Generally you can't determine the mean from just the range and median, unfortunately. To illustrate: [1, 2, 3, 25, 26, 27, 49] - Range: 1 - 49, Median: 25, Mean: 19 [1, 23, 24, 25, 47, 48, 49] - Range: 1 - 49, Median: 25, Mean: 31 You could possibly approximate if you had more info about the shape of the data, such as the skew. Hello! How do I calculate the median and the mean here? I'm so confused. (Source: pwn math book).
I don’t think you would have to take the time to calculate the mean and median for this. Mean is more influenced by skewed data, this graph has a positive skew meaning that the mean will be greater than the median. More on reddit.com

How do I find the mean?
You can find the mean, or average, of a data set in two simple steps: · Find the sum of the values by adding them all up. · Divide the sum by the number of values in the data set. · This method is the same whether you are dealing with sample or population data or positive or negative numbers.

What are the different types of means?
The arithmetic mean is the most commonly used mean. It’s often simply called the mean or the average. But there are some other types of means you can calculate depending on your research purposes: · Weighted mean: some values contribute more to the mean than others. · Geometric mean: values are multiplied rather than summed up. · Harmonic mean: reciprocals of values are used instead of the values themselves.

What’s the best measure of central tendency to use?
The mean is the most frequently used measure of central tendency because it uses all values in the data set to give you an average. · For data from skewed distributions, the median is better than the mean because it isn’t influenced by extremely large values. · The mode is the only measure you can use for nominal or categorical data that can’t be ordered.

r/askmath on Reddit: How to calculate the mean from range and median?
January 29, 2024 -

Hello,

I'm doing a literature review and that requires me to compare the average age of study participants.

I have found three studies where they only list the age range together with the median, but no mean. Is it possible to calculate the mean out of those data? An approximation is enough.

Study 1: Range: 18-37, Median: 31 Study 2: Range: 18-75, Median: 29 Study 3: Range: 18-59, Median: 22

Thanks so much in advance.

Answer: (1) Mean:-The mean is the total of the numbers divided by how many numbers there are. To find the mean, add all the numbers together then divide by the number of numbers. 6 + 3 + 100 + 3 + 13 125 125 ÷ 5 = 25 The mean is 25.
