I thought treating my hypothyroidism would help stop weight gain
So cutting calories doesnt help nearly as much as eating a nutrition based diet. I got my thyroid issues treated and had a similar problem. I went to a nutritionist that was actually good, I journaled what I ate for a month and they broke down where the issues were. It turned out I was protein deficient and having far too much sugar in my diet. Fixed it and slowly started to naturally lose weight. I do basic cardio on the weekends. It’s very slow, but it is progress. More on reddit.com

Weight gain and hypothyroidism - What works?
I think it’s too soon , I have been around 6 months taking Levox trying to find the right dose for me. Also every time my dose would get increased , it was a nightmare but after 4 weeks I would Go back to normal . It is a slow process, so try to be patience until you work out the right dose for you , I bet when you get there , will be easier to lose the weight. Regarding your calories , don’t go crazy cutting so much calories at the time (cut 300 calories at the time ), losing weight is a process. Adding 2 - 3 hours cardio weekly would help a lot . How do certain conditions like thyroid make you gain weight without a calorie surplus?
I have hypothyroidism caused by a piece of my brain being missing. When I don't take my medication, things in my body stop happening. My hair starts to fall out, my skin starts to peel, I get colder, my muscles get weaker, and I get sick more easily. All those are signs that the metabolic processes inside my cells are slowing down. My baseline calorie needs drop below what a euthyroid person the same size as me requires, so if I eat the same amount as them, I'll gain body fat because my body's just not going to use that energy for anything. Is hypothyroidism an excuse for weight gain?
Hypothyroidism can make it more challenging to lose weight, and easier to gain weight, compared to someone who doesn't have hypothyroid. In order to lose fat, a person needs to consume fewer calories than they burn. This is true for people with and without hypothyroid. What often makes losing weight challenging for people with hypothyroid is that the calories burned part of that equation is lower than an equally sized non-hypothyroid person. So, for example, a 30 year old 5'9" man weighing 175 lbs with 20% body fat who does not have hypothyroid may burn 2,000 calories a day (just an example). But someone with the same exact age, height, weight, and body fat but who has hypothyroid, may only burn 1,900 calories a day. If both of those people eat 2,000 calories a day, the non-hypo man will maintain weight, while the hypo man will (slowly) gain weight. I think what that person on another sub was maybe trying to say is that even with hypothyroid it is possible to lose weight. You just have to figure out what the optimal calorie intake is for your specific situation. More on reddit.com

Patients with hypothyroidism will have a generalized slowing of their metabolism and reduction in their basal metabolic rate (or BMR) which can lead to changes in the way their body expends energy. Now, with a lower metabolic rate, people can gain excess weight eating a similar diet. Some of this may be excess fat, but there may also be fluid retention. So, even if you are diligently dieting and working out, you may still gain weight if you have hypothyroidism. Because early symptoms of the disease are varied and can imitate the symptoms of everyday life, millions of cases of thyroid disease remain undiagnosed or are mistaken for other disorders.
