November 25, 2024 -

I buy things online with my moms card and honestly I’m just tired of having to beg to use her card and then her not wanting to give me it at times even though I offer to pay her back in cash so I’ve been asking for an account/ access to a debit card for a while but she just refuses to get me one, I’m looking into getting a job currently so I can have a form of income and having a bank account would be nice currently just to be prepared, every time I’ve asked if she could open me an account she asks with what money, even though every time I’ve asked her id have around $100+ in cash I would be able to deposit. Am I missing something? Would there be fees I’d have to pay monthly which is why she isn’t wanting to open an account for me or does she just not want to? How do I convince her to open an account for me.

Looking for recommendations. my oldest has been going out places with her friends and I’d like to have a way to give her some money without handing her cash or one of my cards. Can anyone recommend a good debit card for someone under 13? EDITED TO ADD My bank doesn’t offer any accounts or cards for those under 16. I’m aware of various prepaid cards that are geared toward kids but have seen mixed reviews on most of them.

I am under 18 and I already have a checking account. Recently, there was attempted fraud on my debit card and the card was closed. In order to get a new card, I have to go into the bank. Do I need my parent to do this? I don’t need to open a new account, just pick up my card, so I am unsure of the rules on this.

Answer (1 of 14): You’re jumping the gun a bit, unless you’re one of those few rare teens who still has a paper route these days, then you might have legitimate need for a checking account. In order to make a checking account make financial sense, you’d need to regularly write checks.

So, I’m 16 and live in Massachusetts. I recently went to a job fair and applied to a grocery store, I just got a callback saying they have a spot for me and they want me to come in to fill out some additional paperwork. This is my first job and if I’m being honest I’m kind of nervous but excited. But that’s not the point, am I legal age to get a debit card? I am awful with cash. And I’ve been wanting a debit card to make everything easier. Is 16 a age where I can get one?

How Old Do You Have to Be to Have a Debit Card | SoFi
September 23, 2025 - Minors may be added to a parent’s credit card account as an authorized user as young as 13. Otherwise, they’ll need to be at least 18 with their own income in order to get a credit card in their name without a parent’s consent. A debit card can be a good stepping stone for a minor to learn how to manage money, without the risk of them creating debt.

Hello! I'm 16 Y/O and a Senior in High School. I've never opened a bank account and I'm willing to learn more about opening one if anyone is willing to give me all the details.

I've also heard many people say that a credit card is more reliable but I'm scared of being in debt or something really horrible leading to my credit score being low and hindering my life in the future. Give me your thoughts and what you believe I should do. I'm willing to learn as much as I can about banking.

Thanks. Dre.

You need a couple hundred dollars to start a bank account (it changes per bank). I would recommend a credit union, personally. Call the local bank and set an appointment to meet with a banker. It’s their job to talk to you, explain what you need to do (they’ll do it step by step, and they get paid for it, so they’re usually happy to give you whatever time you need). It’s really sort of unreasonable to give a step by step on reddit because each bank is a little different. You really need to call a local bank that you trust (maybe one your parents, or a friend uses), and get an appointment with a banker. Once you explain what your goals are and what you want to do, and have the answers you want, they will set an account up for you. But yeah, I don’t think that’s something reddit can help you with lol

Do you have an adult available that you trust? In most places the only options for opening bank accounts under 18 involve custodial or joint accounts with an adult (usually a parent or relative) since you can’t sign contracts. If you do then you should look into opening one (common suggestions here would be Ally, Alliant CU, Discover, or local credit unions); in some cases you’ll only need as little as $5 or so to open an account (though be wary of fees; AFAIK the options I listed don’t have low balance fees, but many banks do). After that it’s mainly just a matter of saving money; a lot of the stuff in the prime directive flowchart won’t apply until you get your first “real” job for many people. Credit cards are definitely something also worth looking into, but that’s in addition to a bank account and generally requires you to have some form of income (i.e. a job) first. I’d also highly suggest reading the sidebar wiki pages about credit and credit cards first though (heck, read the whole thing, it’s one of the best resources I know of). CC’s used right are definitely helpful, but there’s a lot of bad myths out there that can really hurt you when used badly.

Hey gang, not sure if this is the best sub for this topic but I'm looking for an alternative option to my current set up with Chase. I have a Chase Premiere Checking account, and two kids checking accounts for my teens. My kids can access their individual accounts via Chase app on their phones, I can easily transfer money to/from those accounts, and they each have a debit card for their purchases.

Since I keep a balance below $15K in that main checking account, I gotta pay a $25/mo fee, which seems obscene to me. I don't want $15k of my liquid sitting in that account collecting minimal interest, so I'm looking to move elsewhere.

I know Venmo has teen accounts, Greenlight Financial I keep hearing about as well. I'll be looking into those. Having a physical debit card is not a deal breaker, but I do feel better knowing they having something on them in case their phone dies or gets lost.

Would love to hear what you guys use for your teens! I'm particularly looking for something that doesn't cost much to use while keeping a fairly low balance, and something app friendly and allows for easy transfers.
