I just opened a checking account and I was wondering if they automatically send you a debit card when you open the account or if you have to request one. I can’t find anything online on this and I can’t figure out how to request a card either

They should just send you one. Look for an email in the next day or two that will say your debit card is on its way. If not, try calling. I can't remember if you need your debit card number to call or not.

I'm a child, and soon to get my first bank account and debit card. My parents both did 20 years in the military, so we have access to USAA. I've heard good things, and not-so good things about Wells Fargo. I would mostly be making small purchases (video games, something at a vending machine, etc.), move allowance from physical cash to a transfer, and a monthly transfer to an index fund. Which would be more suitable, and a better experience? Any help is appreciated!

You all should also be able to open Navy Federal accounts too! I have USAA and Navy Federal for my kids. Navy Federal gave me much better rates on an auto loan years ago than USAA did and better credit card limits/terms. Young teen did have some fraudulent charges on the USAA debit card and they were easy to get resolved. Doesn’t hurt to have both!

Sign up for USPS Informed Delivery. Great service. Guessing your mail is being stolen or misdirected. Alternatively, the bank has the wrong address on file, especially if you have moved since opening it. Updating it online may not update it everywhere in their systems. Or vice-versa. Insist on knowing exactly what address it will be mailed to. Finally, this presumes your account is working (able to login, bill pay, withdraw in person, etc) other than no debit card. If your account is locked, then fraud dept is likely involved. In that instance, they may have no intention of mailing the card.
