Government Hacking | Privacy International
It also permits the government to conduct novel forms of real-time surveillance, by covertly turning on a device's microphone, camera, or GPS-based locator technology, or by capturing continuous screenshots or seeing anything input into and output from the device. Hacking allows governments to manipulate data on our devices, by deleting, corrupting or planting data; recovering data that has been deleted; or adding or editing code to alter or add capabilities, all while erasing any trace of the intrusion.

Government hacked their own website
Hacking aside, this is probably one of the worst messages on .gov websites. Some .gov sites simply say that gov has shut down, no updates to this websites until etc etc, DOJ simply says "Democrats have shut down the government", and then this heated message that sounds more like a political banner. Is it sheer coincidence that low programming level correlates with writing skill like this? More on reddit.com

How is the hack at National Public Records possible?
Once upon a time I worked a military base pool as a life guard. When someone came in to swim, we scanned their ID. Have a nice day, the pool is free for Active Duty.... It stored their SSN in a table on the computer. In plain text, right there when they checked in. Even as a teenager, and the other teens I worked with thought, "Hey, that doesn't seem right." There are systems like this ALL OVER THE PLACE. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. More on reddit.com

why are govt websites so easy to hack???

I'm not from India, but maybe the Indian Government just isn't good with security? Maybe they don't have people with good technical skillsets and cybersecurity knowledge working for India?

Just how good are the people working in the government’s elite hacking units?
So, for the NSA, I have very limited knowledge, but I can show you one of the companies that they like to use to certify people: https://store.k54.com/ This was found on an NSA job app: https://apply.intelligencecareers.gov/job-description/1166578 Other than this, basically all certification and stuff is done through internal and or non public training. You can actually find their Pearson Vue portal here: https://home.pearsonvue.com/wag Though there's limited info here as well... Basically the best advice I can give - Master Windows and Linux, be super confident in CCNA level networking, get your OSCP/OSEP, get your CRTO, and top it off with the K54 certifications and you should have a pretty damn good shot at getting an interview. All that would be left is acing the interview and succeeding through the polygraph test. Just remember, $150,000 is about the limit for public sector. 175-200 + bonus is closer to the ceiling for private. Hope this helps. More on reddit.com

r/computerscience on Reddit: How is the hack at National Public Records possible?
August 15, 2024 -

I've read about 2.9 billion records being stolen containing SSNs amongst other things. The recordset is over 250GB in size. National Public Records, in Florida, isn't even confirming it happened, but some of the records are available on the dark web now and all for sale. How is this possible? How can someone transfer 250GB of records? I would think this database (and infrastructure) is secured to the highest levels and with at least sensitive data being encrypted. Or is this a really elaborate scam? I welcome any insight anyone has. Also, how would you secure a database/system storing billions of records of sensitive information? If it is a hack, what did they do wrong?
