😎 Have you ever used the eyedropper tool to sample a gradient, and your gradient gets applied to every little item individually? All you want is for your gradient to apply to the whole design! Turns out it’s pretty easy. CTRL/CMD+8 is your friend here. Or go to Object - Compound Path - Make. This ‘unifies’ your design so the gradient applies itself to the whole thing. N.B. Make sure you make a duplicate of your design before you make it a compound path. Because when you release it (Object - Compound Path - Release) it’ll fill every little ‘hole’ or enclosed space in your design, which you’ll then need to cut away again. So be careful when you use it on outlined text, otherwise it’ll fill the ‘counters’ of letters like ‘O’, ‘R’, ‘A’, etc. 👍 #logodesign #illustratortips #graphicdesign #graphicdesignercommunity #designtok | TikTok

Many ways to apply a gradient to a pattern in Adobe Illustrator. Previously I showed that by expanding an object you can add the gradient inside of it. If you want to reduce the number of points in your graphic design file, there’s an alternative way to add a gradient to a pattern. This is a little more complex, but will make sure your design remains speedy. By setting our gradient as a clipping mask, we can ensure adobe illustrator remains very responsive. #adobeillustrator #illustratortips #illustratortutorial #illustratorskills #illustratortricks #graphicdesign #graphicdesigner #graphicdesigntutorial #graphicdesigntips #design #designer #designtips #designtipsandtricks #designtools #designhelp #designinspo #designinspiration #howto #learn #creative | TikTok

r/AdobeIllustrator on Reddit: How do you add gradient to entire object (different colored fills) to create a shadow? Illustrator CS5. Thank you.
October 28, 2021 -

I'm working on an illustration composed of the linework, the colors (done with the brush) and shading done with purple at Multiple transparency at 30%. I saw a video where the guy creates a new layer with same transparency value of Multiple at 30%, clicks the gradient tool, draws a short line starting below the illustration (painted with several colors) and a beautiful shadow is cast on the illustration. He uses photoshop, I'm on Illustrator CS5. What am I missing here? I've been searching everywhere for hours and can't find anything that comes close to recreating this effect.

This is the video. He applies the effect at the 20:05 mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhChRyWtMgM&t=1231s. I can't apply the Overlay effect he does after this either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Starting to digitally color my scanned inks and these 2 steps would really elevate my game.

Thank you so much for your time and assistance.

He has a marquee around the illustration, so the gradient affects only the contents. The gradient looks like black (or dark purple?) to transparent, multiply, 30% opacity overall. Illustrator doesn't have marquee selection, so to recreate this you would need to create an object that encompasses your drawing, such as this: https://i.imgur.com/rgjOENs.png This one is a copy of my objects, then Pathfinder > Unite. Then apply the gradient to that object. You could also simulate this with Appearances, but it's a bit more tricky to understand: https://i.imgur.com/XST9jSI.png You can add a fill to your objects at the group level. This will appear to fill them all individually, but it's just on top of their existing fills, nothing has changed. Then use Effects > Pathfinder > Add on the new fill. This simulates actually joining all the objects; they appear as if they were united, but they're still separate. Then apply your transparency settings to the fill.

The effect looks like he recreated the shape, pasted in place and merged it to get the whole art encompassed. I would then use a gradient in a transparency mask to get the subtle ess that shows. Also allows you to recolor it easily. So select the new shape, copy it, open transparency, create a mask and paste the shape in. Then with that shape still in the mask and selected apply a black to white gradient, adjust as disired. Exit the mask. When you select the shape now the fill will show just a color and not the gradient so it's easy to change the color while maintaining a gradient.
