r/DIY on Reddit: Vinyl/Laminate flooring Underlayment Installation Help
July 1, 2021 -

I'm installing either a vinyl or laminate click together floating floor, not sure which one. I am using this quiet walk plus underlayment, i started a room already and was pulling the underlayment a bit tight to reduce wrinkles, as well as stapling it down. Come to find out, instructions say to adhere the laps, but nothing about fastening the underlayment to the subfloor. I did pull the strip and adhere the laps together, but did I make a mistake by stapling the underlayment to the subfloor? Should I not have pulled the underlayment a bit tight? I would appreciate any advice, thank you

You should pull it tight but don’t go too crazy. Don’t want to warp the middle of it by pulling too tight. You should adhere the edges together of it, but I’m not familiar w/ the underlayment you picked. All of the ones I’ve used either had strips of tape on one edge or the weird puzzle pieces. Also I’ve done it on concrete so staples weren’t really an option. Also once you get some flooring on it. It doesn’t go anywhere. Don’t do the whole room of underlayment. Do it kind of in lock step with your rows of flooring. Make sure to leave a small gap that you can cover with baseboard/quarter round around the edge. The spacers are super handy for it. It’s needed for expansion/contraction. Otherwise you can end up with buckling. Other biggest satisfaction factor is the thickness of the laminate. The thicker ones go together easier and tend to absorb sound better as well. We have done laminate flooring in 5 or 6 houses and took a free class at the floor & decor by my house before the first time to pick up some info. Edit: sorry for the brain dump

Thanks for the feedback. Have you personally, or know someone who has experienced problems with the floor, after applying the underlayment in this manner? I guess it makes sense that the underlayment may be designed to move as well as the flooring, since it is suppose to be cut short of the wall 1/2"-3/4" all along the perimeter. Would it be good to open all underlayment rolls and allow them to settle for a couple days before installing them. Or do the small factory wrinkles in the material not affect the flooring and should be left as is?

Using foam on foam will restrict any movement. I would suggest removing the old material since it’s unnecessary and then installing your new laminate flooring that already has the foam attached.

Do you have to put underlayment before installing laminate, in a house which has wooden subfloor over 18 inches high crawl space, i.e. no chance of getting wet from bottom? - Quora
Answer (1 of 12): The crawl space is usually vented, so moisture should not be a problem if the standard has been followed. Nonetheless use an underlay to reduce noise. Make sure the subfloor is secure and not creaking when stepped on. Even if it not creaking, I would still buy screws and lay dow...
