Vinyl isn't very thick, and it is quite plastic. This means that over time, it will conform to the shape of the floor beneath. This means that you will see grooves in the vinyl where there are gaps between the plywood sheets.

This means you want the sub-floor to be as smooth as possible. BUT!!!! you need gaps between the sheets to allow for expansion or else you risk having the sub-floor develop a slight buckle.

Here's what I would do under ideal circumstances:

  • Spend some time screwing down the existing floor to the joists. This is likely the only opportunity you will have to do so.
  • Get some 1/8" Hardboard, Lauan or birch plywood (one side smooth) and lay it down without gaps over the sub floor. At this thickness, you can staple it down.
  • smooth any edges/fill any gaps.
  • Lay your vinyl.

However, you need to make the call as to the quality of the existing floor the level of imperfection you are willing to tolerate. It may not be worth the extra expense and labour to do it this way. In which case, I would fill the worst gaps, sand down the worst edges, and lay down the vinyl.

After making sure the surface is clear of all miscellaneous stuff (staples, nails, tacks, etc.), inspect for dry rot or weak areas—hammering the surface to test strength every foot or two would not be overkill. Replace any substandard panels.

Then use a leveling compound to "erase" any knots or gaps in the wood. If there are holes, plug them with a dowel or other similar means, sand smooth and (if needed) use leveling compound to smooth them out.

Also, stomp around on the subfloor to identify any loose edges and squeaks. If you find any, screw the areas securely to the floor joists. Beware of squeaks coming from the floor joists, though typically most are caused by the subfloor edges rubbing against itself or against the joists.

People with sheet vinyl floor, how is it attached to your subfloor?
Not exactly your question but seems like it’d apply to sheet vinyl just the same. Fwiw: I used the snappy plank vinyl and highly recommend if you can afford it. Suoer easy to score and cut into the funky shapes you’ll need. I used the adhesive that comes in a tube like caulk. My floor is 1” foamular, 1/4” birch plywood, adhesive, vinyl. Built it a couple years ago, lived in socal and now salt lake (both v hot in summer), go to the desert frequently in the summer, and never had an issue. If you think about it the adhesive is mostly to keep the vynil from sliding sideways. And it wouldnt just be one vinyl panel - it’d have to move your whole floor since the planks snap together. You’re never really going to have an upward/prying force on the flooring. You’re also highly unlikely to have a sideways force. More on reddit.com

Do these floorboards need plywood layering before vinyl sheet flooring?
In high traffic areas over time you will get depressions in the vinyl. My kitchen flooring is laid over some patchy concrete, and even with the layer of underlay you can see where the patches and unevenness are - and that’s without actual grooves deeper than a couple of mm. Personally I would ply it out. Some thin 3mm stuff won’t cost the earth, just tack it to the floorboards with some pins. More on reddit.com

Vinyl Sheet Floor Installation
Your list could include adhesive, double-faced flooring tape, a vinyl cutting knife, a 100 lb. roller and other tools. Check your installation instructions for specifics. Most vinyl sheet flooring does not require acclimation. Simply unrolling it just prior to installation so it can adjust to the environment is sufficient, and also allows the roll to relax and flatten out.

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: How to install vinyl sheet flooring to a wall?
December 19, 2016 -

I have a wall I want to design an accent wall on. I have backerboard on it because I might change my mind later and want to do stone or tile, so I figured it was worth the extra bucks to have a good base for that. In the meantime, I want to save some cash and put up vinyl sheet flooring on there( http://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-10-ft-Wide-Diamond-Black-Vinyl-Universal-Flooring-Your-Choice-Length-HX70DT10X1MB/205569019) What's the best way to put this up?

Also I used 3x5 pieces of backerboard so there are a lot of seams. How can I get this to look flat like a normal wall? Any ideas appreciated, the cheaper the better!

May 28, 2023 -

Seems the traditional way to attach sheet vinyl to a subfloor is an adhesive that’s spread with a trowel. Do you use this same adhesive in your van or something else? Concerned with the excessive heat in most vehicles if this type of glue will hold up. Thanks!
