r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Vinyl Sheet Flooring Over Old?
October 26, 2018 -
Hello!
Can I install vinyl sheet flooring over the old one? The old one is in good shape but it's uuuuuuggggly.
Also, any tips or tricks? I plan to template the room and pre-cut. I plan to remove the toilet. The vanity is in place and I'd rather not move it or the shower pan. I have baseboards but they are lifted an 1/8 above the floor so I am thinking I can slide it in underneath.
Thanks!

Ideally you should be removing all flooring down to subfloor before installing new floor. Regardless, you should put a layer of luan between either the existing vinyl or plywood subfloor. When installing luan, make sure the staples are not protruding and seams are tight. If seams are not tight, you'll need to use a skim coat.

Be sure to check with the flooring manufacturer’s instructions to see which type of glue you’ll need. If you’re using the tape, you can apply it directly to your subfloor. If you use the adhesive, spread it evenly over the subfloor using a notched trowel. Start unrolling the sheet vinyl in one corner of the room.

I've looked all over YouTube, and I can't seem to find any consensus on how to lay sheet vinyl. Some people swear you should glue the whole thing, some people say you should only glue the perimeter, and some people say you shouldn't glue it at all. Is there an industry standard?

Installing Vinyl Flooring over Layers of Old Flooring - GreenBuildingAdvisor
September 28, 2022 - I would not want a squishy layer under sheet vinyl flooring. I don't even like it under rigid flooring, though that seems to be a trend. I would use a rigid underlayment, which as far as I know is typical under sheet vinyl. It could be 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2" A/C plywood, nailed or stapled into place.
