Everyone starts with “no experience,” so don’t stress. A resume is just a way to show you’re responsible, reliable, and can learn. You don’t need formal jobs to do that. Things you can include: School projects (especially group ones or anything with deadlines) Volunteering (community service, school events, church, etc.) Clubs, sports, or leadership roles Babysitting, mowing lawns, or any side hustles Relevant coursework (computer classes, writing, math, etc.) It's good to get into the practice of framing what you’ve done in terms of skills (ie., communication, teamwork, problem solving, responsibility). Employers hiring at 17 are looking for reliability and initiative, not 10 years of experience. If you want more detailed examples, check out the wiki . It has guides and samples for students. How to Write a Resume With (Literally) No Experience
  • GPA (if high enough)

  • Academic achievement(s)

  • Relevant coursework

  • Extracurricular activities (ex: clubs)

  • Volunteer work

  • Odd jobs (ex: babysitter, dog walker, caretaker, lawn mower)

  • Personal projects

  • Certifications

  • Skills

I would suggest trying to get any minimum wage job somewhere under the recommendation of a family member or friend. That’s how I got my first job.

If you can’t do that, I would start volunteering and completing free online courses or certifications to pick up a new skill.

How do I write a resume as a teenager with no job experience?
If you’re applying for your first job as a teenager, we recommend looking at our teen resume examples to get started. As with any resume, you’ll start with your contact information, a resume objective, and then choose to prioritize either your education, your skills, or any extracurricular activities. Even without having a job before, there’s a lot of experience in school, volunteering, sports, and more. Add your responsibilities and accomplishments in any role you’ve had, as some of these will apply to most jobs, such as making inventory, planning school events, or organizing study groups.

How to Write a Resume With No Experience (Examples & Tips)
Is it hard to get a job without any experience on a resume?

You can impress recruiters even without any experience on your resume. Writing a resume with no formal work experience means showcasing your skills and putting a spotlight on your education, extracurriculars and volunteering activities.

When you start putting together a resume, you might feel like you don’t have any relevant experience. However, you can demonstrate community involvement, abilities and willingness to work.

Perhaps you worked part-time in school, tutored or babysat kids — be sure to include these experiences. You can also include extracurricular activities that help polish and develop new skills.

r/resumes on Reddit: How do I make a resume with no work experience?
May 7, 2024 -

Hello, I just need a bit of help. I’ve been trying to get a job for a really long time now and I’m struggling like crazy. I have no work experience and have applied to hundreds of jobs with no response.

I’ve tried no resume, resumes, in person, asking for help from friends etc. I’ve made a few resumes over time but none have gotten me any luck. Should I just straight up lie at this point and put work experience there? I don’t know what to do. My resumes were nothing special either, just general beginners ones.

I need a job desperately and I would appreciate any help or template. Anything. Thanks in advance.

First, don't lie about your experience, that can come back to bite you. Instead, focus on transferable skills. Maybe you've done volunteer work, school projects, or even just helped people in ways that show your abilities. If you’re still stuck, consider hiring a professional resume writer. They can help you frame what you do have in the best light. A well-organized resume can make a huge difference. This article explains how professional help can save time and boost your chances.

Please don't lie about your experience! Employers can check and if they think you lied, they won't call you back for an interview. Start with a resume summary; 2-5 sentences about your key skills and immediate career goals. Here's an example for someone with no job experience (this one's a college student): Biology major with hands-on laboratory research experience and strong analytical skills seeking an entry-level data analyst position. Proficient in Excel, R, and statistical analysis through academic coursework and a summer research internship. Eager to apply scientific methodology and data interpretation skills to help organizations make evidence-based decisions. If you don't have any work experience, then you'll need to list anything you've done on your resume, like internships, volunteer work, school organizations, major school projects, or personal projects. It's also important to prominently list your skills, focusing on the skills that relate directly to the job you want to apply for. Don't leave off your education, and try downloading a free resume template to make your resume look more professional, too. Good luck with your job search!
