I am in a Research and Engineering class in HS, trying to make an underwater robot to spot lionfish. This is the first year of the class so things are a little shaky in terms of the teacher's engineering experience, hence the cringy setup we have for the camera. I'm basically using an old Raspberry Pi I had from a summer program that came with a camera, and it's affixed inside a box made of transparent acrylic panels. Currently it has five walls put together with acrylic cement and a loose top that we haven't yet got a plan for. I need to be able to open the box to charge the battery and access the Pi, but it also needs to be watertight to a depth of thirty or forty feet. Also, it has a quarter inch thick cable coming through a hole in one of the sides, so we also need to figure out a way to seal that.
Any ideas?
How do you waterproof an acrylic box?
Does acrylic yellow over time?
Hello all
I have searched this sub and the general Internet for a couple of weeks and I have gotten some really good information and ideas.
For future planning (a few months away, at least) I'm planning to build some small animal cages out of acrylic (AKA plexiglass AKA Plexiglas). I learn best when it's person-to-person and real people are giving their feedback (as opposed to static books/websites) so what I was wondering is:
A. If anybody has built such cages before (for example, for snakes or turtles), does the type of adhesive you use matter?
B. Are there similar materials that are better than acrylic/Plexiglas/plexiglass for this purpose? In plastics stores I've seen polycarbonate and glass but unless I'm mistaken one is toxic to animals and the other is much heavier, right?
C. If I got all the panels pre-cut and formed them together myself, how much money does that actually save compared to buying big sheets and cutting them down yourself (I'm trying to figure out whether it's "really" worth it money-wise to cut my own sheets when I have no idea what I'm really doing)?
D. Anything else you wish you'd known or that you'd like to tell a total newbie? I've built shelves with wood and chicken pens (wood, wire) before but it seems to me that this project will have to be a lot more precise.
Thank you. I love this sub. It's very informative and makes me feel like there are so many possibilities when I come here! :)
I am currently in the process of making a planter display box with existing flat pack acrylic box such as embedded image. These boxes will be 15x6x6" boxes made completely of acrylic.
I want to make the box hold water for the plants and am wondering the best option of this would be. I have left over uv resin and would like to know if it would be sufficient for low pressure situation to prevent water leakage as I find acrylic cement hard to work with. Also if this would be sufficient to hold acrylic in place to prevent warping from humidity difference within display.
Many thanks
