How do podcasts make money, and when to start monetizing yours
October 11, 2023 - A Spotify marketing lead says, “Once your audience gets a bit bigger, if they happen to be very loyal and engaged, you should consider setting up a podcast subscription. This can be a much more effective way for creators with audiences in the hundreds or thousands to make money compared to ads, or at the very least is an excellent complement to ads.”

How to Make Money Podcasting in 2025: What's Working (And What Isn't)
September 29, 2025 - Most podcasters spend months hoping for sponsor emails that never come, when they could be earning real money through affiliate marketing and their own products from day one. Stop waiting for someone else to validate your worth. Focusing only on download numbers: Vanity metrics will kill your motivation and distract you from what actually matters. I’ve seen podcasters with 50,000 downloads per month make less money than those with 5,000 highly engaged listeners.

I spend at least 10-15 hrs a week on my own podcast that makes $0. I’m wondering if the skills I’m learning, can make money in other ways? Obviously I could edit others podcasts, but if they are making $0 why would they want to hire me? Are there online companies that hire podcast editors? Or other ideas?

You can monetize your podcast by creating products around the topic of your podcast. So if your podcast is about pizza, you create a cookbook about pizza. (Amazon KDP, Apple Books, etc) Set up a print on demand (POD) website that sells shirts, hats, posters, etc about pizza. (Printify, Tee Spring, etc) Create a course about how to make the best pizza dough. (Skillshare, Udemy, etc) Reach out to companies in the pizza world for an affiliate link. So a meal kit company that makes pizza may have a theirwebsite.com/pizzapodcast link you can use to put in your show notes. When someone clicks on that link and makes a purchase, you get a portion of that purchase. (Search affiliate marketing) Search YouTube for “how to monetize your podcast”. Pat Flynn has some good info on this subject. Pat Flynn’s strategy on this is you only need 1000 true fans. And if each of those fans spend $100 on the products you have available each year, you’ll make $100k per year.
