Cedar is my go to. Built one out of pine and it damn near exploded before I could properly finish it. Cedar is expensive but widely available. If you keep it finished with Australian Timber Oil it makes it pretty much weather resistant. Answer from SaverioJames on reddit.com

I’m looking to make a simple outdoor table top (I already have some stainless steel legs) and I was astonished by the lack of outdoor suitable wood options… what are you all doing for outdoor furniture?
I can get cedar for $7.70 per board foot for rough cut, but even that is like $400 of lumber just for an 8’ table top.
EDIT: For those downvoting both me and the commenters… why? What about this wood species selection post has offended you? Please just downvote me and not the kind folks responding. Thanks!

Cedar is soft and will certainly show dents and scratches but will not rot. Hardwoods like teak or ipe are durable and beautiful but are very very expensive. I work in the industry and have used both types. I built raised garden beds from old growth western red cedar 10 years ago that still have not rotted and I have built decks using ipe that get direct sunlight in 100 degree marine environments. The best inexpensive and long lasting option would be to build it out of a kiln dried pine sealed with a deck sealant. As long as the boards aren’t touching and water can drain you will have an outdoor tabletop that will last many years.

Outdoor Patio Table: DIY Guide – Home and Kind
May 18, 2021 - We went with the flagstone stain, starting with the underside and then moving to the top. Staining can be scary—I loved the table so much at this point and we had worked so hard on it. We were crossing our fingers we would like the stain. We also took a paint brush to the cracks because there were some parts where the rag couldn't get in to distribute the stain. Then we let it fully dry, put a couple coats of polyurethane on it, and let it dry overnight. I love the end results of our outdoor patio table!

January 14, 2025 - Tip: Make a stop block jig for easy cutting of the (14) 1×4 @ 27 3/4″ slat boards so they are all the exact same. You can see this jig in action in the outdoor table VIDEO here!
