If you haven't already, just put your podcast everywhere... that's the way a podcast was always intended to be. Never fully rely on someone else's platform for your revenue. I suggest looking into Podcast Index ( https://podcastindex.org ) and the Value4Value concept ( https://value4value.info ), and then pick a great non-platform-specific podcast hosting service that supports generating revenue in multiple ways. (I currently like Blubrry) Host-read ads are the best of ads, but if you are niche enough, go for sponsors. And, if you can develop community, go for V4V. As a voracious podcast listener, ad-insertion is the worst. I like to support the podcasts I love, or hear about great products/services the hosts use and love. Everything else is going to perform much worse. Answer from SteveW928 on reddit.com

Did Spotify really just make it 10x harder to monetize?

At what level do you monetize a podcast? And how?

For the podcast I host (The Pavocado Podcast), I mention to my listeners briefly at the beginning and ending of our episodes that I have a Patreon set up for the podcast that they can donate to. I think that’s definitely a sustainable option if you can convert some of your listeners into pledges

Monetizing Spotify
All host sites will publish to most of the podcasting platforms, but not all host sites will hook you up with advertisers. I’m not sure what your current host offers, but Spotify will pay you. Spotify allows you to make modest money if you publish through Spotify and allow them to insert automated advertisements. Then - If you have at least 1,000 monthly Spotify listeners, Spotify qualifies you to record an ad read specifically for Spotify for Podcasters. This plays $14 rpm for all Spotify steams and $11 rpm for streams on all other platforms. Spotify also allows you to activate subscriptions (though I wouldn’t recommend this unless you have a large and loyal base of listeners). It’s very modest money I make doing this and I would make more if I took the time and found sponsors on my own. Still, I am usually able to bring in $100+ every month with 7-12k monthly listens. It’s better than nothing! More on reddit.com

How to monetize podcast?
Check out Buzzsprout’s monetization program. You would have to change hosts but you may meet their requirements. My podcast is hosted with Buzzsprout and though it’s too new to meet the download requirements I have been happy with the service so far and chose them because of the monetization service. r/podcasts - At what level do you monetize a podcast? And how?
November 24, 2014 -

A few of you know that ever since I added my podcast feed to spotify my traffic has doubled. Now I'd say it's probably 5-6x it's original levels. Still not anywhere near the big dogs, but yesterday with all my traffic sources combined I got a new high of nearly 900 downloads. Makes me happy!

Typically I get between 300-700 downloads per day now (about 70% of that coming from spotify)

My question is, what are the best ways to monetize and how?

Some of my ideas:

  • I have my own digital products which I plan to push more over the coming months. Right now I don't mention them except sporadically on the podcast.

  • I also have an email list that I try and get people to sign up for and then give helpful info and sell products. I don't sell too much through my list. :(

  • I'm not opposed to sponsorships, but I don't even know how to find someone, or if my traffic levels would be appealing to a sponsor.

I'm happy with the amount of traffic my podcast is getting especially since I spent more than a year getting 10-20 downloads an episode. But sometimes I wonder if the traffic is high quality?

My website traffic has increased some, but not drastically. I also don't have many consistent sales of my products.

What do you all do to make money with a podcast? My first goal right now is to make it so my business is not constantly losing money each month. To do that would require about $270 a month. I feel like I should be able to do that with this traffic?

What am I doing wrong?
