r/woodworking on Reddit: How to paint over varnished wood without sanding?
March 26, 2015 -
So I decided to paint a chessboard onto a varnished (lackered?) wooden table. I don't know what these words means, but the table is shiny and seems like its 'laminated' so to speak.
I put some painter's tape on it and then realized I didn't sand it down first, but I don't want to redo my taping.
Is there a way to paint over it without having to redo anything, and also without the paint peeling off easily?

Paint Couture or Annie Sloan paint are specific paints for furniture which don't need sanding. I have used it a bunch of times and can confirm. To prevent bleed through, tape your project, then apply a coat of polyurethane over the tape seams. The poly fills in the places where it would bleed through so the paint has nowhere to go except where you want it.

Can you paint on top of varnish?
You need to sand it first! Whenever you paint over something that has a clear oil-based finish on it, you have to rough it up so the paint will stick. If it’s a big flat surface, you can use standard 220 grit for the whole thing. If it’s small or has a lot of curves and edges, you’ll want to use a finer grit.

May 24, 2025 - There are several products that claim to be capable of being applied over varnished wood without the need for sanding. However, I’d advise against it. You do not need to sand all the varnish off the timber, nor do you need to sand the varnish so it’s completely smooth. What you do need to do is create “a key”. When you sand a surface, you’re essentially creating thousands of tiny scratches. This gives the paint something to grip onto.
